I am sitting here reading all the stories of Turkey, and the feasting that is to happen - or has it already happened, I have a chicken shop just over the back from my place, and I just got a waft of them cooking, an tried to picture myself at one of your houses smelling the turkey cooking, oh dream girl dream ! ! ! ! ! ! !
HAPPY THANKSGIVING

I have to feed the dogs now
, then go out and take care of the horses.
But first..... a funny about the muslims today. I thought I knew something about their religious taboos as to food and drink. I am now confused. One of the muslims mentioned that he owned a meat market that sold pork. Another asked where the nearest liquor store is. They needed more beer.
Any wonder this place is called Surreal Farm?

Afternoon all!
Just back from getting the car fuel gauge checked. They have no idea why the gauge would go from full to half full in the space of 30km, could we keep a record for the next few weeks to help them pinpoint the problem....
Had coffee at my people watching place while I was waiting for the car. It's amazing. Same town, whole different crowd to the other coffee shops. I saw a girl who was obviously young who is 8.5 months pregnant, with her fiance, con her father. He said he would buy her a cot for the baby, she wanted it today and had already picked out the one she wanted. Who will know if it isn't new he says, I will she says. I can't do it today I have things I have to do, he says, please dad she says, over and over and over. After about 20 minutes she has him worn down and he heads off to the bank to get the cash. When he leaves she says to her fiance, hehe when we get out there I'll say I really need a mattress too dad and he'll buy it...

Heidi, I figure it's like Catholic and Jewish people. I have a lot of Jewish friends who eat ham and pork except on the holidays and Catholic friends with only 2 kids.
Suzanne, I wouldn't take it on for anything!

Another interesting experience at the coffee shop. There was an old surfer dude sitting next to me. Long white hair, about 60 years old. We started to talk. I was not expecting much given the usual clientelle at that coffee shop, but he was incredibly interesting, thoughtful and fun. We talked about everything to using up the world's resources, road closures, the way things used to be in this town, people's expectations from life, gadgets (he uses them all, but isn't impressed by them) etc etc etc. He was just filling in time before he started his shift at the community radio station where he plays rock and blues music. I'll have to tune in and check out his selection.

He sounds like a great person to talk to. That's a strange coffee shop. The pregnant girl sounds like a real loser.

It is the strangest coffee shop Heidi. I never go there when I am with friends, only when I'm alone and feel like seeing how the other half live. Most of the people around are more like the girl than the interesting man. I once saw a girl sent into the shop, with money, to buy dog meat. She came back with a few bags of it, her mother asked why they hadn't given her a grocery bag to put them in, she said it broke. When the mother went inside to order her coffee the girl's brother sais 'you lifted that didn't you', yeah she answers...

As I was feeding the dogs, I happened to glance out a window and saw that my horses had escaped (not the new ones). I ran out and jumped the fence to block their escape. I then shut the gate going to the driveway. Once the dogs finish their turkey suppers, I'll go back out and put them back where they belong.

Well hello lovely people - had a lot of reading to do - couldn't visit this morning because I went 'C-word' shopping. Got a lot of it done and feel oh, so much better.
Hi Martha - haven't seen you around much at all. Come and visit us here more often.
Suzy - loved the cafe stories - haven't we all seen people like that and isn't it nice to come upon the interesting ones.
Heidi - I love your Surreal farm stories. Tell me, do they have to slaughter the meat Halal style (ie facing Mecca).
Suzy said something profound that I wanted to agree with - oh yes, thinking about and caring about the people we know on this site. I totally agree and understand - you have all become very dear to me and I wish I could meet all the ones I haven't met yet. And I do worry when someone is ill or has a problem. Hugs to you all.

Yes CynB.... all animals are done Halal. Today we had 8 adults working. Tomorrow we will have ~ 20 adults here. I believe that they're doing 50 sheep tomorrow. I don't know how many will be here the next 2 days. The last day they'll be doing cattle. I will have to help with that. The only way they can lift them is with the tractor.

Heidi we learn some interesting things from your experiences.
Cyn, this friend would love to meet up with a lot more friends. If ever any of you want to come over to the UK I could squeeze you in at my place. Though it would be better for you to come here in the summer unless you want to freeze.
Suzy, your chat with the 'old surfer' sounded great.
Martha welcome to SA8 hope we see you here more often.
Richard is working from home today so I will have to appear to be doing something around the house rather than spending all my time on the computer

Evening all!
Just here trying to stay awake until Ally comes home. I didn't stay at rehearsal tonight because I didn't want to risk infecting everyone with a busy couple of weeks coming up. I was going to go back to pick her up but one of the other mother's offered to drop her home. This is the young mother of the friend I was teasing on fb and I mentioned pushing the buttons of the wise old 23 year old. Turns out this condescending 'woman' has 3 kids, had the youngest when she was 15, doesn't get out of bed before 10 (who gets the kids to school?) has never had a job and loves to give advice and show everyone how superior she is! All regrets I had for being a cow/troll are gone! Wish I'd been a little more brutal....na, not really.

Brenda - same goes for if you and Richard ever came to Australia. I'm sure there's plenty of us could squeeze you into our houses - and would love to meet you. Best time to come to Oz is Spring or Autumn - you would find our summer heat stifling.
Just a subtle hint, you realise.

Brenda, last time we were in UK you went to Canada. And we were very close to where you live!
However we do intend to go back in the next couple of years.
We have been playing twilight bowls in a fun game. It made an enjoyable evening.

Good morning all. Hope all the topsiders had a great thanksgiving and all the down-unders just had a great day. I have read the posts but forgot most of what I read, but I will try not to leave anyone out.
Bean, thoughts going out for your brother.
Suzy, I probably would have called my older brother also. He would have called his friends and they would have beat the **** out of the bullies. My brother did not like anyone messing with his little sister.

Rolanda, I will be thinking of your mom on Tuesday morning.
Heidi, your story made me laugh. I found out years ago that Jewish and Muslim dietary laws are very similar. For all of you avoiding the "c" word, remember, YOU have until the 25th. My family is coming over on the 13th. I have 2 weeks less to shop. Luckily I don't have to buy too many gifts. On my side, we draw names and buy for 1 adult. I have my SIL and hubby has my dad. We all buy for the kids. The only kids are the beastie boys. Makes my job easy.

I have a funny story to tell, I just hope it reads as well as I can tell it.
13 years ago, in June, I was working for Macy's and had to inventory the leftover Christmas merchandise. I was pregnant with #1 son and told them they needed to send help. I was not going to the top of 20 foot (6 meter) shelving to get it down. They sent me this guy named Jim. I knew him, but not well. He was known to be loud and a little bit of a fanatical Muslim. I was like lets get the job done. He got the merchandise down and helped me get it organized. I took the scan gun and he did the recount. We got it going smoothly and started talking.

part 2
We started talking about the differences between Judaism and Muslim. It was an interesting conversation, a learning experience for both of us. All of a sudden I burst out laughing. Jim asked what was so funny. I said I just realized what we were doing. A Jew and a Muslim sitting side by side counting Christmas items. It took us 20 minutes to get back to work. People walked by and looked at us. We told them what had happened and all laughed, but not as much as we did. One of the most fun days I ever had at work. This all took place in the stockroom so no customers could here us.

VERY funny, and deliciously surreal.
I've noticed the similarities between Jewish and Muslim diets, too. I frequently wonder why the 2 groups dislike each other so much (historically, not as individuals like you and Jim).
