Wonder how Heidi is keeping the birds warm? I'm guessing that's a part of the reason the sledge hammer has been pulled out! I think she'd do it for the birds before she did it for herself...

SUZY, you are so right, The finches cage is covered with about 3 or 4 blankets, and she is hoping that will be enough. I said" You probably more worried about your birds then about You" and she said yes, I am more worried about them.

he he..I ducked...you missed me.... ya not knockin me block off today!!!
Mum used an old copper over an open fire and used a hand ringer...
Coolgardie safes are remarkably effective...
Water was all heated through the wood stove...even after the power came through and the generator was dismantled.
We used oil lights when there were blackouts...not infrequent...the genny should never have been done away with!!

Not here - doing ffuts - I know a family who lives without power now! Petrol washing machine etc. They also have a caravan at a caravan park and sometimes stay there.

Mobile numbers in my phone, email addresses on my computer, everything else in an address book...

I still keep a paper address book with names, addresses, and phone numbers. I had a computer crash a few years ago and was glad I had a paper backup.

Hello friends! I'm alive, but only just - we have had no power since 10:45 last night - about 15 1/2 hours of sweltering heat. Rob has gone to Canberra, lucky fellow! When the power people finally came they said our air-conditioner was drawing too much power for the whatsis to handle - how is that possible? It's all new - surely the people who installed the thing checked that the system could handle it? I don't understand this at all - had to go and have a bit of a weep (ok, I'm over it!) So now I've got a little fan running, which is nice, and I have a fridge that works, which I guess is all you really need. And I'm reading about other people's problems, which are much worse than mine, so I'll stop being a sook!
Hope Heidi and Gil are coping with the terrible cold, and all their pretty birdies are safe!

Judy - weep away! Temps in the 40s and no air conditioning, not even a refrigerator! Good money paid to people who didn't check for something that seems like it should be basic in their trade!

Hey Suzy! I'm over it now! At least I'll have a little airconditioner in my room tonight - walking upstairs is still like stepping into a furnace - I feel so sorry for people who don't have any kind of cooling, and I'm sure there are plenty of them. When my first was a baby we had temperatures like this for about a week. I used to sit in the bath with her - she really loved it!

What is the world coming to?

A four-year-old girl thrown from Melbourne's West Gate Bridge has died.
A Royal Children's Hospital spokeswoman said the girl died at 1.35pm (AEDT) on Thursday.
Police say a 36-year-old Hawthorn man has been charged with murder and will face the Melbourne Magistrates' Court later on Thursday.

I just read some reports - two older boys were in the car when the father did this. The parents were in the middle of "on-going Federal Court matters".

No friends online, bummer.

Guess I will say good night and hope all of you have a safe remainder of your day.

I am so thankful tonight for a well light, warm home, and the hot cooked meal we had at dinner, the shower I was able to take this morning. there are so many without these luxuries right now.

eaa, we had a wood burning heater with a "jacket" that heated water. this was in Mom's wash house, a room attached to the garage. she had a wringer washer and tubs to rinse in. Dad thought the new automatic washers used way too much water and electricity!

VIV, there was a local case not long ago, where a father threw 4 of his children off a bridge. I cannot imagine how they can do something like this!
