This is apparently a pretty common thing for men, faced with losing their children, to at least contemplate - I guess they may not be totally sane at the time. Not that there is any kind of excuse for something like this.

Better get back to whatever it was I was doing.
Oh yes, making a 70th birthday card for my neighbour.
He is having a double celebration on Sat. night with a friend of his at the Wauchope Country Club.

A large fire has started in Victoria - though nowhere near our Melbourne friends, it is in an area with 42C temps and winds. Not good...

Re - the little girl over the bridge. How absolutely horrible, indeed. It's hard to know what goes through the mind of a person who would harm his/her own children. Was he intending to toss all 3 kids, then himself over? And then woke up to himself too late for the little girl. There is far too much acrimony in marriage break-ups to make a person so desperate. Not that I'm defending him at all but any pain he was in will be magnified for the rest of his stupid life. Now one life is lost and another 4 (the boys, the mother and him) ruined not to mention the distress caused to their families and friends . An absolute human tragedy!

CynB it is a tragedy for everyone who's even close to being involved. You can only imagine the harm done to the two children who witnessed it.

MizT - thanks for the Heidi report, I had to go off to visit my Mum before you got back to us on that. Pleased they are OK but feel bad for them having no heat, power or water. But - one thing I think we've all learned about Heidi is that she's an extremely resourceful woman - she'll find a way to make sure the animals are safe and warm, as long as she does it for herself and the humans around her. She'll miss us as much as we'll miss her!!

The coolest room in the house is currently 37 degrees [98.6F] and it is as hot as hell outside... I think the 44 predicted has well and truly been surpassed!!

All of the birds in the neighbourhood [ok, a lot] have been congregating on our front porch out of the heat and under the grapevine covered pergola out the back...it is always 10 degrees cooler there. Lachie has just put a large dish of water out the front for them...there were 2 magpies, 2 rainbow lorikeets and a honeyeater sheltering there when he came home. All the small birds are out the back.

Have caught up on the reading...absolutely aghast..I've just watched the news. How can any situation be able to get to this stage...there but for the grace of God goes any of us. Nobody knows just how high the bar is or at what stage they will crack. I feel dreadfully sorry for everybody concerned... I have witnessed a few 'psychotic' episodes in the most seemingly unlikely people and it is truly a very scary thing. What a pity he didn't just jump himself... I don't think there is any coming back from something like this.
Puts my problems in perspective..

My sister lives in Swan Hill and has a channel running along the back of the property. Yesterday when the temperature got above being bearable she and her prospective daughter in law walked out the back gate and jumped in fully clothed!!! I'm still giggling at the thought. Water was cool but 'something' nibbling at her toes kept her moving...
[she could have taken home some yabbies for tea!!!]

Bean - your sister must have been desperate. Maybe it was an eel? I remember swimming in a creek at my ex-in-laws place near Gympie in Qld. Lovely cool water on a hot summer day until an eel swam throught the middle of us. Yeccchhhh!!

Back from the shops. Bought a lot of naughties - Rob won't be home tonight, and I have to console myself somehow! And by naughties, of course, I mean chocolate, before anyone starts with the smart talk!

Heidi would love this joke - shame she'll miss out!
THE BLONDE FARMER'S WIFE
A blonde city girl, marries a dairy farmer. One morning, on his way out to check on the
cows, the farmer says to his blonde wife, "The insemination man is coming over to
impregnate one of our cows today. I drove a nail into the 2 by 4 just above the cow's
stall in the barn. You show him where the cow is when he gets here, OK?" Then the
farmer leaves for the fields After a while, the artificial insemination man arrives and
knocks on the front door. Th blonde takes him down to the barn. They walk along the row of
cows and when she sees the nail, she tells him, "This is the one...right here."
Terribly impressed by what he seemed to think just might be another dizzy blonde, the man
asks,"Tell me lady, how did you know this is the cow to be bred?" "That's
simple. By the nail over its stall", the blonde explains very confidently. Then the man
asks, "What's the nail for?" She turns and walks away, and with complete
confidence, says, "I guess it's to hang your trousers on."

OMG Bean - that news item is atrocious. And I'll bet the parents of the boys are defending them - 'poor little dears were led astray, etc etc...'
Turns my stomach. I have grandies growing up and I am so scared about how they will handle peer pressure. There's some ominous signs already. I agree - has the world gone mad?

I read about that a while ago - I think it must have gone to court to make it back into the news. The girl thought she was meeting one of them, then got dealt the lot of them... trying to make sense of it is impossible
