I think Heidi needs the electricity for the water pump. Our daughter has both an electric pump and a fuel one. Necessary if there are fires about. She also has portable gas for cooking and the gas BBQ. She water for the house needs the electric pump but she can just get buckets of water from th tank if necssary. It is a shame Heidi does not have something similar.

No AC June! They must be miserable! The library is the best place here. Though I noticed today that most of the air conditioning in town was working well for a change.

Very hot here! D#3 just came down a while ago telling us there was a fire in Wrights Forest, the other side of Cockatoo. We could see the smoke, but it is not listed on the CFA sitrep site, and we can't hear any sirens, so we take all that as a good sign!

Gail, one of the fires listed is close to where I think you said Liz lives. Have I remembered correctly?

Suzy, all the ones I see on the list in her direction are all listed as small, so that is all good news.
At the mo, the fires of concern are one in Endeavour Hills, which is a suburb on the outskirts of south eastern Melbourne, somewhere which would not be used to this sort of situation.
The other one, which has now caused the evacuation of the town of Boolarra, is in the Gippsland region. Also in trouble is Mirboo Nth, another town close to it.

We have just thought that the smoke we saw does not come from near, but from the fire at Endeavour Hills, which is in that general direction.

Dino is in the South Gippsland. These fires are quite to the north. I am sure she would thank you for your concern.

Gippsland is a fairly big area and some areas have a lot of trees. Dino lives near the ocean but I am not sure just where. I had been trying to pinpoint the fire in Gippsland but the town they mentioned was very small and not on my map.

Time for me to go - I've just updated my facebook page with my employer (hubby and kids) and position (general dogsbody and chauffeur). Now it's time for me to fulfil my chauffeur duties..

June, does Ken always complain of being cold? I know Al is cold in winter, wants the heat on broil, and I am melting. Luckily the bedroom here with computer is the coolest room in the house, so I can get some relief.

I am wondering if Ken is running fever, that could make him feel cold in the summer time.

GAIL, stay alert, stay safe. The smell of smoke upsets me, I can imagine how you feel. I just feel uneasy and on edge.

Other day when it was warm enough for windows open, I smelled smoke. Al said, maybe someone burning trash. Nope, it was wood burning and too warm for a fire in a fireplace. I kept going to door looking . Later, when I smelled smoke again, strongly, I went out on front porch and looked south. Some stupid someone was clearing brush and burning it, with wind blowing.

Smoke can really travel. We got smoke here 2 summers ago, from the big everglades fires, and those are HUNDREDS of miles from us!

Some said, MizT, I think about heating and cooling stations in extreme weather. I think I heard that in Adelaide and possibly Melbourne that the foyers of all Government buildings were open to the public to come in and get respite from the heat - as they should be - bet those buildings and their air-cons won't lose power at all. Hope they're supplying cool drinks as well, she laughs!
Is this how you feel, Melburnites?
Have a cool drink, sorry I don't have more to offer - only alcoholic beverages.
For the freezing topsiders, have a coffee to warm you up -

Can't help but agree Suzi...37 is VERY WRONG!
Our house is solid brick and it takes a long time to heat up ....but when it does it is very hard to cool down and it takes a very long time!

We moved into this house almost 16years ago to the day [next week] and it was a day like this...house was cool when we opened the door to the removalists after being shut up but in no time it was as hot as hell...the bitumen in the street that was melting was being tracked into the house... memories... or I could be freezing like Heidi...no thanks.

Temp outside the front door 30*c, inside 25*c. A nice breeze blowing so quite pleasant. I just feel for those experiencing extremes.

I always feel the heat more than Ken and he feels the cold more than me. Will have a jumper on when I am still in short sleeves. But I believe in MY comfort.

Temp outside my back door 29c, inside 27c (air-con not on) where the thermometer is but where I am, I'm getting a good cross breeze so it's probably about 25c - quite comfortable too June.

How nice is it to have the aAC in the car. The days of driving with the window ofen to get some air through. And in the cold when everything fogged over and you could not see where you were going..
