Suzy - for a lawn-mowing business, the heat is good - Colin can handle it, he's always worked outdoors. What worries us is a long wet season.
Rolanda - yes he's starting up a mowing and maintenance (home and garden) business.

Boy I had a lot of tabs open - it's taken me forever to log off everything...

Rolanda, it didn't have my temp after 9 either and it's after 11 here! But my back door trick worked.

Cyn, I dread the outdoors now... It burns, it burns!!

I have to go too. Have been avoiding doing ffuts for days. Have a small gathering tomorrow here in honour of Mary/Manly and better make the place presentable.
Judy and Bean, if you happen to see this, I know I said about 12ish, but if you can make it a bit earlier that would be great. The house is still reasonably cool at this time of the day.
Catch you later good folk.

Rolanda - Colin said 'No worries - as long as you pay travelling costs and accomodation' - he figures it will take about 4 weeks round trip driving a ute towing a fully equipped trailer from Brisbane across the Nullabor to Perth and back. To mow your lawn - approx 30 mins. Cost - since you're a friend, he'll mow your lawn for free, just pay the other expenses ($30 per hour - sound OK?).

Greetings Sudokuland, I thought I had posted this morning. Today was shopping day, and errands, a long day away. A trip to the dentist also, Al had broken his denture. Left the teeth ( he has an older set he kept for emergency) but even so, took a while to see the technician and show her what was wrong. It was VERY obvious, they were broken half in two right between the front teeth. I put away all the groceries except the canned goods, that can wait till tomorrow.

Inside is usually about 10 degrees cooler [providing air con is on...] so I'm figuring it is probably about 43-44 outside now...we are usually a bit hotter than the city temperatures

I was just reading that power usage is so high in Vic that the state is on the brink of a power meltdown. But the good news is a cool sea breeze due on Saturday afternoon - just over 24 hours to go. WooHoo!!

I did hear from Heidi again, they still do not have electricity and said they were freezing their behind off. I asked how the animals were doing and she said she is afraid she might loose one of the older collies.

They are looking for a generator, none available in their area. I am thinking they need the generator for pumping water from a well.

She said she knew of no shelters where they might go to warm up a bit, and get hot meals. She said things were still bad there, it would be even colder tonight and they were expecting another storm.

That is why they started rolling blackouts yesterday... they did this last time it was so hot. Just hope that it is someone elses turn today...

MizT - Oh dear poor Heidi.
I'll bet every generator in the whole area has been snapped up. With all those animals it would not even be an option to just pack up and stay somewhere else for the duration.
Tell her we're sending warm thoughts and love.

Have to go and sign MORE paperwork. Accountant says - don't use your own money, get a loan, better tax-wise. Meanwhile we have spent more time with or financial advisor than one another lately.

NO, not an option to pack up and go with all the animals they have. Reason I asked about a shelter where they could just drop in and get warm, a warming station. There were such set up during one of our heat waves, only they were cooling stations. Chairs were put in lobbies of buildings that had AC, for those who did not have it to come in and stay cool daytime.

I know such shelters are opened in some areas of KY, but I read that officials are having difficulty getting the word out, radio stations are off the air in many areas, and peoople do not all have battery radios when stations can broadcast.

Afternoon all!
Thanks for the Heidi update Tricia. I have been thinking about her and wondering. Did she get the damper open? It doesn't sound like it if she might lose one of the dogs.

10 minutes of an empty house Rolanda - that is not fair or right! How will you stay sane if they only let you have 10 minutes?

Bean, 37C inside is just wrong! And 34C doesn't sound any better. I checked the BOM site and it said 42.3 outside for Melbourne, a few degrees cooler where Gail is.

Cyn, hubby took a call yesterday from an older woman - no idea why they directed it to him! She told him that her 85 year old husband with alzheimers is able to help with the dishes and so on, but he just can't mow the lawn. Is there anyone who could come out and do it for them - obviously she meant for free. Hubby said the sad thing is that they are sitting in a half a million dollar house (probably about $20k when they bought it). Asset rich - cash poor. He is going to make some phone calls for her, but neither of us have ever heard of that kind of service. Meals on wheels, but not yard work.

Hello SA7 folks...I've been MIA for awhile and the pages have added up..no telling if I'll ever know whats been going on...but I do hope all is well with everyone...Life has been dictating things that have kept me away from the computer and will make it difficult to be here on a regular basis for awhile...but all is well. I have taken possession of my scooter and am in the process of learning all of the ins and outs prior to taking to the streets..in addition, the weather must be dry and currently we have been inundated with snow, ice and rain...therefore, I cant take it out yet...but I will soon be racing around... Will try to read a couple of pages and do the jigsaws...catch you all when I can...stay well! Peace.

Maybe Heidi can load some of the animals in one of her tractors that has the heating and drive around the paddocks for a while.Or maybe she needs power to pump the fuel into the tractor?
What a nightmare with all those animals AND all her health problems. The cold will not be helping.

And thoughts all going to our Melbourne friends. I have not contacted my family down there but I know it must be hard as they do not have AC. Work and daycare should be OK. I guess you just go and spend the day in the nearest shopping centre and hope they do not loose power.

I did a bit of gardening earlier, but that got a bit hot so I am now inside enjoying the AC. It is another room as hubby keeps saying he is cold!
