Have you any jacarrandas out at the moment Suzy.
Sydney is so pretty at the moment that it is a pleasure to travel around. We have one in our yard and quite a few of the neighbours have them too.

Hi Nola. Overcast here with some rain.
I better go make the bed etc. Off to do some messages and then to meet John and Jane at the cafe for crosswords and coffee. I was supposed to go yesterday but had to cancel as hubby is on hols and had the car.
I will check back shortly to see if anyone has responded to my query.

Viv, There is somewhere you can call for finding out about wages and working conditions but I do not have time to chase it at the moment.
It also becomes a difficult situation as once you complain, the job, unjustly, becomes less secure.

Viv, it doesn't sound legal but I wouldn't know for sure. The Workplace Ombudsman site says "Money can’t be taken out of your pay if customers leave without paying or if the cash register is short." which seems to fall into the same category....
I haven't noticed any jacaranda's out down here June. They are beautiful! I should keep my eyes open more...

I dont think they are allowed to take anything from your pay unless you agree to it!An ombudsman may help?

Viv, if you google workplace ombudsman it takes you straight to that site and there is a link for young workers. Unfortunately though, June is right about the security of his job, particularly as I assume he is a casual.

The sad part is ,if someone complains, they just dont call you in for any shifts and get rid of you that way. There are so many others who will take the work.

Hi June. Yes I will search out where to ring but do take your point that it becomes a difficult situation once I speak to her about it.
Hubby says we should discuss it with her as he says it's not right, but at this stage I am not doing anything until I at least have some facts behind me. Thanks for your input.
Have a great day at your bowls.

My son is having a pay issue at work but his employer is his cousin.I'm worried about the repercussions on the family as it involves a bit of money in back pay.

Nola, I'm thinking that if there are repercussions it's the cousin's fault for 'ripping off' a family member. Probably more 'taking advantage' I guess. And if he is taking advantage your son, a relative, what is he doing to the other employees?? Sounds so simple to assign blame, but it always goes further than that doesn't it? In fantasyland, cousin will realise he's been doing the wrong thing and fix it all without complaint. In dreamland one of the other employees will complain and everyone will get what they deserve without family repercussions... In the real world, ouch! Sending hugs!!

Now for my 2 cents worth...... I don't think it looks good if your son has to go running to Mommy when he thinks something is wrong. That doesn't look like he's doing a grown-up job. If there's some place to call, have him do it. If he is going to grow up, he needs to learn how to handle his own problems.

If he's old enough and responsible enough to hold down a job, he should start learning to stand up for himself. If he's to young to, maybe he's too young to work. Just my opinion.
Now I need to go out and do the feeding.

Good morning lovely SA6 people - gosh I had a lot of pages to catch up on.
Heidi - I disagree, he is only 15 and I think it's still perfectly acceptable for his parents to stand up for him. If he was 17 - yes, it's time to stand up for himself.
Viv - when you speak with the ombudsman, also check the rules on unfair dismissal in case his boss takes exception to being challenged and tries to get rid of him. Although, in that case it would hardly be pleasant working conditions to stay on, would it?

Liz - glad all went well yesterday. My hubby has a video of his, taken several years ago before DVD's. I tell him to toss it - I don't want to look at it and it's not something you'd keep for posterity now, is it????

Suzy - back to yesterday's discussion of fried rice. Try basmati rice. It may be more expensive but it doesn't go gluggy and I put it directly from the saucepan, still hot, into the frypan and get excellent fried rice results. Matter of fact, might make it tonight. I've had my years of washing, spreading and cooling rice. This is great!

Morning Cyn, well said.
I'm really upset right now. My SIL sent out an email in October which I didn't see. My inbox for my old email address got between 30 and 120 'junk' emails a day and it must have been caught up in those, and the one sent to hubby's work address was sent to his spam folder by the work system - he found it today. The email was telling us her mother had died!! It has been almost a month and we haven't acknowledged her mother's death!!!!! I'm now waiting until she will be home from work (It's 2.51pm in LA right now) so I can call....

Even with my amateur attempts to make fried rice, every last grain was eaten! Ally had seconds! Ally never has seconds unless it has sugar in it!!
We use basmati rice - low GI. In fact we buy it in 5kg bags! But the way we cook it makes it sticky rice. Hubby doesn't like it any other way. Guess it comes from his Korean connections (his first wife was Korean and he met her because of his love for Korean food and through his Korean friends).

OH VIV, that sounds so very unfair! If this rule is not equally applied to all, that is discrimination. I thought any work place rules had to be applied across the board, or not at all, Well, at least here.
Hope you find something out. Do let us know how it goes. Hugs to you both!

Viv - there's one advantage that you have here. If this situation turns out badly either in Ethan losing or choosing to leave his job - you know lots of people in Port and word spreads like wildfire. You pointed out where he worked to us. I would not go in there unless this is resolved fairly. How mean-spirited to deduct $10 from a kid's pay. (You can tell I've mulled this over while having a shower and got madder by the minute!!!!!)

Everybody said that I was wrong about the boy standing up for himself, but I agree wholeheartedly that he was treated very badly. Unless all cases are reported, no one worker should be singled out in this way. And I've never heard of such pettiness. It sounds like the sort of thing that IH would do to an employee.

I have been fuming about this all morning and I don't think it's right even if it is applied to everyone at his workplace. Imagine how much money those big bank execs would have to be coming up with right now if the 'pay for your mistakes' rule was applied to them!!!

I have never heard of any restaurant type place EVER fining employees for a mistake. They make enough profit on stuff they sell, and pay their employees so little, that they can eat the expense easily. Can you publicize it, like mentioning this to a small town paper that might enjoy exposing how they treat kids?

Yes Heidi - we knew it was only the issue of standing up for himself. As a parent, I know that I would have stood up for my children at that age, especially as it's only a casual job while he's still at school.
Like Suzy, I am still fuming about this employer. These establishments must make allowances for wastage - and they do in what they charge the public. This person's workplace practices need to be exposed!
