Hi Rolanda!

I've just uploaded a photo of Tahli with her cake. The designs on the side were different all the way around it. Alie spent hours making it perfect. The photos don't do it justice.

SUZY, I watered the outside containers, so of course it rained was a gentle rain, the kind I do not know about unless I look out at the parking lot to see if it is wet. I really miss hearing it rain here. Looking forward to seeing the cake Allie made.

Heidi, of course you know when to check for newborns, you are so observant of your cattle. Gil just does not think ahead that way.

Rolanda, I saw the photo of you and June, on TOS. A great photo, I might add, both of them looking well. Glad you two were able to arrange that meeting.

Suzy, I was tall for my age, and very blond. My younger sister and brother were small, being premature twins, even when they were in first grade. They were brunette, like Mom. Someone mentioned such a difference in us, to my dad at a PTA meeting Mom was president of PTA then, dad was known there as 'Edna's husband' which did not set well with him. that might explain his comment when once again someone asked about the difference in us. 'OH,' says my once only married dad, 'Patricia is my daughter by my first wife.'

Time to get dressed for the day. Tanya is to come and go with me to grocery today. I have to stock up before the epidural tomorrow morning, not sure when I will get to grocery again after that. Hugs to each of you, with extras.

Your father was telling the truth, MizT. And he had a great sense of humor!
No newborns last night or this morning. I still expect 2 later today, but neither cow is in labor yet.

I have a cow in labor.... but the calf is a breach, and I can see only one back leg presented. Of course it is Wednesday, when no Veterinarians are available in the area. So I'm going to watch her for a while, and if that other leg doesn't appear, I'll have to reach in myself and try to straighten the leg. I already have the cow seperated from the rest of the herd, where I can easily get her up in the barn. I REALLY hope that second back leg appears on it's own.

Is there a neighbour who can help you Heidi, that will be too much strain on your back. Hope it all works out well for you, cow and calf.
June - hope the effects are lessening for you and you soon start to feel like your od self.
Suzy the cake is lovely. Wishing your hubby well for his op. Do you have a date yet? Are you keeping well yourself? You seem so busy these days.
Julie - you haven't been putting much detail on site - hope your hubby is feeling better and you are able to have some 'me' time.
MizT - you are amazing what you can get done. Hope the headaches go and the epidural is successful.
Keep them coming DorA.
Cheers for now.

We have a date! 15 march! Our anniversary is the 17th so we'll go out the weekend before to celebrate. 27 years! I can't believe anyone could put up with me for that long! We had to pay the full amount in advance. We could have gone public for no cost but couldn't choose the date or a bunch of other stuff. We'll get some back after the surgery, it depends on what they end up having to do. Hubby looked doubtful about the amount but I said he is worth it.

Good news, Suzy. And that's only 3 weeks away. It could have been a lot worse.

I lost the cow (actually one of the first time heifers). I had her penned up away from the rest of the herd. I tried to get her up in the barn and into the hospital pen, but she started to get too agitated, and threatened to jump the fence so I quit. When I went back to check her progress she was gone. She DID jump one of the fences. I looked around but couldn't find her anywhere. She's probably back in the woods. I'll have to wait until morning to search for her. Hopefully both she and her calf will survive. Jumping the fence could have repositioned the calf and helped. But it's too dark and wet outside to find her tonight. At least it's warm.

I've got the heifer/cow caught again, but still not in the barn. My Vet is unable to get out here today, so I called another Vet. He can get here later today. At this point, the calf will be dead in her, but I want to save the mom. I have 2 helpers coming at noon to help me get her into the barn to wait for the Vet. That's all I can do. The calf is too wedged in for me to reposition it.

My helpers arrived. We got the barn ready for the cow. I got a call that the Vet was on his way. We started moving the cow towards the barn and the dead calf popped out of her. First thing I did was to call the Vet and tell him to turn around. Then I thanked my helpers. We put the poor cow back in with the herd where she wanted to be, and I'm taking a break before burying the calf. Nobody else is in labor. Calving season isn't always a fun time watching the miracle of birth. At least the cow is alive to breed again.

Heidi, sorry about losing the calf. I have helped pull a breach calf out and it can be hard work.
I saw my diabetes doctor yesterday. The blood test I had on Tuesday showed that liver function is normal and all other blood tests were good. I am controlling the diabetes and could maybe get off the insulin in the future. See him again in six months. It all sounded very positive. I have the CT scan on 13 March and then we will know more.

Anniversary plans are made. We're staying in Kiama overnight and going out for Mexican food. That probably sounds weird to Americans, especially those who live in southern states where Mexican restaurants are on every corner,. I miss good Mexican food! I hope this place is good! It has good reviews, but those reviews are made by Aussies. We went to one south of us a few times, but the last time we went the meal came with white rice.... gasp. A cafe in town has Mexican night on Fridays, but don't even offer enchiladas. I liked their food, but....

Nothin' wrong with white rice for latino cooking, Suzy. Having lived in Costa Rica, I know white rice is the norm for more than half the dishes that are served with rice.

Another heifer calf born early this morning. No problems.

Just had 2 more bull calves born. The count is now 7 bull calves, 6 heifer calves. The one dead calf was also a bull.
The temperatures have dropped to slightly above freezing. Close to normal temperatures for this date. Both cows gave birth in a sheltered area out of the wind, on dry bedding. Today and tomorrow will be the coldest days for a while, then back up to unseasonably warm weather.

Glad you had a good time, June. Wonderful that the team treated you to 2 wins to make the trip extra worthwhile.

No new calves this morning, and nobody looks imminent. I can have a nice, restful day today. I need it after yesterday. I went to the farm store and bought four 200 lb tubs of hi-mag protein supplement, five 50 lb bags of loose mineral and six 20 lb bags of dog food. I rolled the tubs out of the trailer into the bucket of the tractor ...2 at a time... and put them all out with the cows. They were thrilled! After that I took a half hour break. Then I put 1 bag of mineral out for the cows and 1 out for the horses. After that, I unloaded the other 3 bags into the storage shed attached to the horse barn. I then took an hour break before unloading the dog food and bringing it into the garage. No real lifting involved in any of this, just rolling and pushing. I use the front end loader on the tractor for the heavier stuff and I have various carts to haul the lighter stuff with. All that besides tagging those 2 bull calves. I ended up very tired, but I didn't hurt the back. I have proven to myself that I don't need that adulterer for anything around here, not even for putting out mineral.

Another quick Hello tonight.

Heidi, you accomplished a lot and without a huge amount of effort. In spite of that, you certainly need and deserve a good rest and good night's sleep!

June, congratulations to your grandson on 2 winning games, and good luck for the final. I hope you get plenty of rest between your return home and likely trip to see the final game! I hope the side effects of meds are dissipating!

MizT, I'm glad you were able to water some of the containers with a bit of help from the rain. Good luck with your epidural! I hope it truly helps a lot!

Suzy, keeping your hubby and you in my thoughts and prayers, and praying for the very best outcome on March 15! Happy 27th Anniversary to both of you! Enjoy your special celebration (and hopefully great Mexican food)! Alie is to be commended for the beautiful cake for Tahli!

Heidi, I'm glad that calving is going well for the most part! I hope the rest of the cows have easy births and the calves are all healthy!

June and Rolanda, I'm so glad you could meet up for coffee and ?

DOrA, yep, we have good taste and enjoy your visits!

Hubby had surgery last Monday (only took 1 hour, and only one night stay in the hospital), and we've been busy with return visits with doctors, duties for wood turning club, mid-winter cello festival, shopping, getting bills paid, etc. The doctor felt the surgery went well, but at least for now, he is still unable to completely empty his bladder. We're hoping it's due to post-surgical swelling and the nerves will finally 'wake up.' He has cataract surgery next month.

I didn't participate in the 3-day festival, but we went for a while Saturday evening to see some of the teachers who had flown in (from California, Massachusetts, and New York. It was nice to see them & chat for a bit during their break. Because of missing 2 months of practicing and only 3 lessons since then, I knew i wasn't prepared to participate.

It's time for me to head to bed! Sending healing energy, prayers, {{{{{HUGS}}}}}, positive thoughts, and !

Another bull calf born. Calving has slowed down during this rash of severe thunderstorms, thankfully. I hate being out in the storms checking on cows. Too dangerous.

The live calf count is now 8 bull calves and 6 heifer calves. Nearly halfway through the season. I have heard thru the grapevine that 6 of the cows I sold have already calved.

Checking in without reading to let you know I am alive and survived my procedure. I was unable to get upright to computer Thursday through Saturday, but then when I tried to post a quick message, my computer was not working. Today is the first day I was headache free long enough to tackle that problem. It was an internet problem with my provider, and I had to do all kinds of scary things under direction of one of their techs. Took much longer than it should, because I could not understand her, bummer. But, it seems now I have 2 of my internet, wi fi, TV problems solved, hope it stays that way!

Head is hurting again now after 45 min of instruction, so I will come back again later to read. Hugs to each of you, with extras.

That phrase they use, 'in living memory'-----
as in, 'the worst floods in living memory' or
'the coldest winter in living memory' ---- just
how far back does it stretch? Because at my
age, my 'living memory' goes back to a week
last Thursday.

Anecdote: Dana's kids like to tell me what to do while driving. Go faster. Slow down. No, go that way. Waaa you didn't go over the wombat bridge! Go grandma go.

Today Tahli said why aren't you going grandma? Because I can't drive through cars Tahli. Why? Okay, if there are people in front of you, do you walk through them. No I go around them. Well, it's the same with cars but cars also can't go onto the wrong side of the road. Oh.

I don't know if that means she won't ask me why I'm not going again or if she'll just say go around them.

Another Tahli anecdote: mum says I love you to the moon and back (think guess how much I love you). Well, I love you more because I love you to Saturn and back. Guess the author didn't think 5 year olds might know their planets.
