Welcome to your own new page Joyce! It's always nice to 'see' a new face and hear a new voice. By any chance is Flower City Brampton, Ontario?

HI, Greg - thanks for the welcome... using this site for more than 'puzzling' & reading the posts ..is all new to me and therefore time-consuming. I believe this is why I've hesitated joining since I know how easily I can become enthralled with the social-part. Our Flower City is Rochester, NY, for the Lilacs - once called the Flour City because of the many flour mills along the waterfalls of the Genesee River as it empties into Lake Ontario. We're quite a bit farther south than you but have had an unusually long winter here as well; but spring is finally starting to appear.

Welcome to the site, Joyce. I'm from Strongsville on the south side of Cleveland, Ohio. My nephew's fiance is from the Rochester area (Greece, NY) so I'll be there the end of Sept. 2015 for their wedding. I'm glad you enjoy the site, as do I. Hope to see you post the occasional comment, but just enjoy the puzzles if you want. I only enjoyed the puzzles for 2 or 3 years before joining.

Hi Joyce. to the site.
We have a Flower City in Queensland, Australia, too. (It's real name is Toowoomba, pronounced T'woomba - Aussies shorten everything.) The Carnival of Flowers is held there each September as we come into Spring. It is only about a 2hr drive from where I live.

Hi, Dottie! Thanks for the welcome! Whenever I'd read your posts - particularly this winter - when your weather comments would be a forewarning of what was on its way here. I have many cousins from my Mom's side of the family who live farther west, south of Toledo along Rt75 who we visit occasionally.
Amazing how small this world is becoming ... when you come for the Sept '15 wedding you'll be arriving just in time for the fruit harvest along the renown Ridge where luscious peaches, pears, & apples are abundant!

Thanks GH for the welcome! Our spring is just beginning; the extensive lilac collection will have its Festival in just about a month ...maybe, if it ever starts being spring-like in weather and not just a meteorological expectation! Rochester really should be called 'Festival City' since once the Lilac Festival is over, there are festivals every weekend through October!

Thank you Sacky for the welcome. Your photos are amazing! I have enjoyed following your bird-antic pictorials - what wonderful close-ups! Our birds are just now starting to return from their wintering in the south...but none are ever as colorful as yours.

Hello Joyce. I was confused this morning when I saw that you had answered my puzzle. Confused because I didn't remember seeing you on the site before. Finally checked the new-members section and... There you were! Welcome to the wacky Sudoku site.

Hi Joyce, Lizzy was exactly correct. I fly model airplanes as a hobby. I put floats on some of them to fly off water. There is a meet this weekend. If you go to my page, the picture on the right is me with my J3 Cub on floats. I am camped near the lake and just now found your question.

Thank you Joyce, for visiting my page and explaining how the name of your city evolved. It was very interesting and so much nicer to be known for the beautiful colourful and sweet smelling flower in preference to the common (but essential !) flour.
I would love to see some pictures of the ''famous lilacs'' which you mentioned, when they bloom in the springtime.

WOW, What a wonderful collection of photos you sent with the links to my Inbox (PM).
That Highland Garden is really something VERY special. I bet it gets lots of visitors each year.
I have 2 very small Lilac bushes in my garden - one white and one purple, they are presently in flower but no challenge to those you can grow over there!
Many thanks both for the links and for my birthday wishes yesterday. Have not been as regular a visitor as was my habit earlier - time being both an enemy and a friend!

Joyce, I hope you have a very enjoyable day celebrating your birthday.
One of the kookaburras is very tame. When I take the dog out I generally take out some mince meat with me. This afternoon the dog was sitting at my feet and I was on a bench seat. I put a bit of mince down for the dog (which she would not eat ) and next thing I had a kooka, swoop down over my shoulder and land at the dogs feet and take the meat. I got a bit of a surprise as they are quite a large bird and only missed me by inches. the dog just looked at the kooka as if to say you can have it, I am not going to eat it. (the dog is deaf)

Hello Joyce,
Thank you very much for your advice. I have Sudoku training to solve difficult challenge every day. This is almost addicting as you say. I am going to introduce my Sudoku solving technic gradually on this site.

Didn't get to enjoy much of my birthday, Joyce. had a bicycle accident a week before and spent the day in Intensive Care. I have no memory of it, though Mike tells me he brought cake and so on. I have been out of hospital a couple of weeks now but still recovering, there were more than a few broken bones. I am getting better. Thanks for the lovely birthday wishes.

Joyce, I walked the bridge both ways. The one you commented on was taken from the top where of Mt. Shiroyama where the Iwakuni Castle is.

Now about the eggs, they are cooked in the steam pots of sulfa. They do stink before pealed but taste no different than an egg boiled in water. The sulfa turns the egg the black color

Joyce, in answer to your queries,

Mallee trees grow in a semi desert area of Australia. They are a small tree and often have multiple stems. This one did not.

The table top is a slice of a Red Gum burl. Burls grow on trees as the result of a bug and the tree tries to overcome it, forming a cancer like growth. The wood grain in the burl is deformed and this is what makes them unique. They are treasured by wood workers. Often referred to as pearls of the forest.

The two parts are joined by forming a mitred cross which is fixed to slots cut into the base and secured with screws. The base is then fixed to the top with screws. If you look in the third photo you can see part of the cross extending under the table top.

The free form edge was formed by nature. It is the outside of the burl with the bark removed.
The top is not finished. What you see is the top after it has been sanded. When a protective coat is applied ie wax, lacquer or polyurethane the colour will change to something like the photo of the underside of the burl. The white/cream colour is the outside of the burl which is a different texture of wood and also it has weathered a lot.

Hopes this satisfies your curiosity.

Hi Joyce. Just to answer your boat question. We live about 2 hours from the Central Plateau, which is a highland area in the middle of Tasmania. There is really good brown and rainbow trout fishing there. And we live about 30 minutes from Bass Strait for our sea fishing.

Since you have probably left the site for the day (hubby needed to use the computer) I thought I'd go to your page to answer your question about Hurricane Matthew damage. Trees suffered most of the damage in the Myrtle Beach area. A pier had been destroyed, a few signs and the movie theater had visible damage, but rest looked pretty normal.
