I actually live in Canton, Michigan, but I am only 10 miles outside of Detroit. Nobody would know that, but I was hoping Detroit was known by the world as the motor city capital of automobiles. I love Sudoku, but sometimes my job and life take up too much of my time. It is so exciting to me when my pictures get used on the Hard ones.

Hi, Cathy. Happy Birthday again! I extended my good wishes to you on easy today, and I added a traditional wisecrack that we always used when I lived there. Some folks that read my comment thought I was being a little hard on Detroit, but I want you to know that I was just kidding. I am a Californian now, but part of my heart will always remain in Detroit. How 'bout them Lions!

G'day on your REAL Birthday, Cathy. Yesterday on page two, I said:
From one Detroiter to another, Happy Birthday, CATHY! I loved growing up in Detroit, but now it's just a great place to be ...................
from ... :)
That was an expression our family used often when we lived back there, so I figured you would be familiar with it. No offense intended!
Have a great one! XOXO

Gosh Cathy, not only is this my first visit to your page, but it's your birthday to! I have a habit of leaving a double chocolate fudge beavertail pastry from Ottawa as a page warming gift, so I will leave you one, but since it is also your birthday, I'll leave a bottle of Pelee Island Shiraz for you as well! Happy birthday, and many more to come!

Cathy, hope you have a wonderful birthday full of joy and those who love you! I also used to dread the birthdays until i was listening to a gorgeous aboriginal lady who was being interviewed. it is such a shame that we don't seem to value age and wisdom as much as some of the oldest peoples in our world! she said something along the lines of "Why would i regret getting older and the lines on my face? They are a sign of the life I have lived and the wisdom I have acquired and I am very comfortable with them. I am respected because of my wisdom. I revel in my life." I have put it very badly, but she is right! We do acquire great wisdom in our lives, and we should have the satisfactions of our achievements. Didn't mean to get so heavy, but I now look at my age proudly and look forward to acquiring more wisdom!
Have a wonderful birthday!

So glad I dropped by to wish you a belated happy birthday. If I hadn't been late with my wishes I would have missed that awesome message from Mariane. I'm going to add that to my book of the 'The Meaning of Life' - hope to have worked it out before my final birthday. My favourite response to someone on apart being yet another year older is blunt and too the point -SURE AS HECK BEATS BEING DEAD! Can't really argue with that, can we.

Cathy,
Grew up in Livonia, attended Wayne State back in another life. I've been studying fossils, so I think I can answer for you. Fossilize isn't the same as petrified. Soft tissue can be preserved frozen (arctic mammoths etc.), encased in amber (esp. insects, but also blood and soft tissue) or dessication (natural mummies like dinosaur bones found with flexible tissue still inside the bone). When soft tissue is replaced or saturated with stone, it's petrified.
The tough puzzle of May 21, 2008 was the FIRST touch I got all on my own with no help, so I signed up as a member to treat myself. Since offerings of food and flowers are the etiquette here, you may have your choice of a plum branch from the nearby orchard in bloom, or a taste of my farmer's cheese and plum pierogi, lightly crisped in real butter topped with sour cream.

Cathy,
Sorry I didn't answer sooner. Did family stuff for the long weekend. Live near Kalamazoo now, in the "Michiana" area. Thanks for the lily of the valley and the lilac. I didn't get to bring any of either in this year because I injured my knee while photographing wildflowers and have been on my behind on the couch for most of the month. We had a gorgeous profusion of dogwood blossoms this year, and now the first irises are blooming. I'll leave you a bouquet of deep purple ones.

Cathy,
I can hear lots of spring peepers and bullfrogs. We had a private group buy some marsh land as a conservancy in our township. The woman who led the effort was a frog surveyor, too.
We've done volunteer benthic macroinvertebrate collection and identification for similar ecological monitoring reasons, but at the mouth of the Rocky River as it empties into the St. Joseph River in Three Rivers, MI.

Hi again, Cathy! We're in Hamilton. And if you're referring to the picture on my home page with the woman in the beige dotted dress, that's my dear mom, who passed away last September. Our Sudoku family was terrific with their support and good wishes during that tough time; such a great group of people!
