We've had a run of very expensive things happen here - hubby killing the car, I killed the laptop (did you know coffee and laptops don't go well together?), Ebob being selected to go to the Outward Bound thing ($150 for just the rain jacket and thermal underwear!!!!! - wonder how much the hiking boots will cost??)

Suzy.... do you have such a thing as a boot outlet? I get my good work boots there at a greatly reduced price.... <$100. And remember to get them roomy for comfort with the thick socks.

I got back from the training class and promptly fell asleep. So I'm gonna head outside now (3:27 am) and do a cow check. I wonder if there'll be any new calves?

Evening everyone.
We have had a lovely cool southerly breeze most of the day here.
What a lovely difference to the awful heat and humidity lately.
Hope the rain is easing off for you girls in Queensland.
I am exhausted reading what Heidi has been doing so off to bed here now.

Goodnight Viv!
Broni - my man problems are sort of over. I felt sorry for the poor thing by the time he came home - wet through and bedraggled. It was no use having a go at him. You can't kick someone when they're down so I just shut up for the time being. I'll wait for the opportune time.

Know what you mean Cyn, no use flogging a dead horse! Hope the water subsided, just wet, soggy and cool finally. Cannot wait for the sun to come out tomorrow, hot, humid, mossies and yeuk!
Heidi, go to bed now missy!

CynB.... I think his suffering for the day may have hammered in a lesson. It may be all the punishment he needs (except for a smug "I told you so" when he's recovered). Besides, you have the fun of telling a great story about it.

I'm heading outside to check the cows again in a few minutes. The temps are staying at a steady 23℉ / -5℃, so it's important to check on calves asap after birth.

Good morning all.
Been reading and catching up. Nothing much new here. I seem to be really tired today (my get up and go has got up and went). Our temperatures here seem to be about what Heidi is experiencing, relatively mild for this time of year. We haven't had a lot of snow lately, so the sides of the road are ucky looking ... just a little over a month and it will be spring. Yeah.

Morning all!
I'm actually thinking I might need a jumper this morning - yay!

Don't you hate it when you are carrying a full cup of coffee from one room to another and you just have to sneeze?

It is NOT mild for this time of year here, Theresa. I am so glad that my tractor has a heated cab. I'm having to feed hay every day with it, plus help anyone who needs it. Earlier today, Robert slid off the road on the ice and wound up in the ditch. I had to pull him out with the tractor.

Heidi, you'd think the cows would be considerate and have their calves in the day time...

Viv, an early night for you. What have you been up to to be tired so early?

Cyn, I knew you'd forgive him. He's too good to be annoyed with forever.

Theresa, I can't imagine -5 degrees being mild! It must be very very cold in small town Canada!

Heidi, did Robert do any damage to himself or his car?

Queenslanders - the photos in the news are very impressive. You are lucky you didn't float away by the look of it!

I'm not real happy with the way the little old lady lawn mower is behaving at the moment. Nothing specific, just different. Her owner thinks she won't make it through this winter. I think she may be right. :(

32 Heidi, or thereabouts. She has several chronic conditions. I'm glad Robert and his van are fine.

32 is old. The average life expectancy for a horse is 30 years. I hope the owners monitor her closely so she won't be allowed to suffer.

They do Heidi. They come by every afternoon, and if I call and tell them there is something out of the ordinary they are here within 10 minutes. The last time she was sick a vet said it wasn't her time yet. Antibiotics fixed her.

Good Morning All.
Heidi, good to hear Robert and van are safe. Must be a rude awakening for the calves being born in -5 degrees.
Hi Zusy, not cool enough for a jumper up here. Heard on the news this morning it was worse than the 1974 floods but it all subsided quickly.

Most of the calves wait until warmer weather to be born. Whenever there's a warm-up, they come fast and furious. There's rarely a problem when they're born in below freezing temps, as long as mama dries them off fast, and they get their bellies filled with warm milk. Worst case scenario is that their ears get frozen and fall off. I'd rather have them born with the ground frozen that have them born in cold mud. Cold mud sucks all the life out of them and kills them.

Wow they must be sturdy and strong when they are born, does it affect the value of the cow if it has no ears?

Broni, my jumper has now been discarded... It's going to be a warm one I think, though there are supposed to be some winds too.

Heidi, they should all be sensible and have their calves in the barn in cold weather - like the clever cow you have.

Heidi and Suzy, -5C is mild for my area for February. Sometimes February can be the worst month of the winter.
Heidi, glad Robert is fine after his slide. Thank goodness you were handy to help out. How many calves do you expect to have in total when all is said and done?

Last week my oldest granddaughter (6) asked me how old I was. I told her I was 17 and she said I looked older than that. I asked her how old she thought I was and she said I must be at least 100 by now.

Another cow is in labor. Not in the shed, out in the middle of the pasture. Her water sac has broken, and I can see the 2 front feet sticking out.

Ebob has given me permission to tell you about her 'blonde' day yesterday. It started in Math where she must have been thinking about her upcoming birthday. She couldn't work out how, if she was born in 1994, she could be turning 17 next week. Maybe she was actually turning 16? It took her the whole lesson to work out she was born in 1993. She wrote 'blonde I is' on her math book, and then had to explain it to her teacher...

Then she was at St John's last night and they were talking about the fact she doesn't like vegemite and teasing her about it being related to her being American. One person then said something like, well at least you aren't Canadian, they're really strange - they have square wheels. Ebob actually said 'Really?'.

Thank you Heidi! I usually try to translate both ways in here, or use the American term because Australians know most of those anyway. I forgot today.
