Theresa, glad the babysitting went weel but sorry you are now suffering. I know the feeling.
Hope everything went well for Rolanda.
What is the music teacher at the school like Suzy?
Julie, your reminder means we need to get things ready for our accountant as well.
Heidi, sorry about the mix up with the cows. I think I would have been yelling as well. I did think the mothers would have made a beeline for their own calves when they were bellowing.

I've just checked fb before going to bed - Rolanda is fine and wasn't in any pain as of 45 minutes ago. Sleep well everyone..

June... Cows are not rocket scientists, and their calves don't always answer them. Newborn calves sound alike... even to their own mamas... and since they sleep a LOT, frequently don't answer when mama bawls - other cows and calves bawl in answer instead. They'll always find each other when on the same side of the fence (by smell) but it's chaos otherwise.

I've gotta go do a cow check now.... should be fun since I'll have to check 32 acres with many hiding places... then go renew the registration on my truck (I forgot about it and it expired 4 days ago).... do some grocery shopping.... then take Chili to the Vet. She's been quite sick - first demodectic mange, (Her skin is still horribly inflamed) and now massive weight loss, tho' she gets fed more than any other dog. This doesn't look good.

Tomorrow morning is the Red Angus show at the Kentucky Beef Expo in Louisville. I want to get a good look at the younger bulls, and hear a judge's opinion about them, before they go up for auction the following morning. IH is still mad at me because I believe that I need a second bull to breed to my present bull's daughters. I don't care how mad he is. It couldn't possibly be as mad as I am at him. He caused serious problems here, then went out of town without fixing anything. Hmmmm.... maybe I WILL buy a cow or heifer, too. That would really infuriate him.
He HATES it when I spend money.

I got a phone call from IH. One of the neighbors called him on his cell phone to tell him that one of the cows was having serious difficulties calving down near the road. he claimed it was a breach birth, and was stuck. So IH called me, all hysterical. I told him that a lot of calves are born breach trouble free, and our calves this year are just sliding out easily. I wasn't worried. Lo and behold, when I went out there, the cow was licking off her heifer calf. This is cow #407, the cow that cast herself and nearly died.

I get so p*ssed off over all the male chauvenism around here. People always call IH over MY cattle, instead of talking to me.

My truck is legal finally. I got to the county clerk's office, only to discover that IH had taken the checkbook out of my purse. I had to go back home, get the checkbook, and return to the clerk's office. One of the things I bought in town were batteries for my stun gun. At the rate IH is going, I'll be using it soon.

Morning all!
Chauvenism is alive and well Heidi. I have a 20 year old memory of something equivalent to your cattle... When I got engaged to hubby I decided I had better get my follow up face surgery over and done with before the wedding. I asked a lot of questions, did some research (not as easy in pre-internet days) and went for it. Hubby came to my follow up appointment and the doc was a totally different person to the person he had been with me - and told hubby stuff about my surgery that he'd never told me!!!!!!!

Just got back from the Vet's. We ended up putting Chili to sleep. She was scratching constantly, and whimpering while she scratched. She'd lost 33 pounds in the last few months, and this while eating more than any of the other dogs (and no worms). She stunk to high heaven, and this despite being treated repeatedly for skin infections and mange. The Vet said we'd ruled out everything simple except internal organs shutting down. And she was miserable. This was the kindest way to stop her suffering.

Good Morning all!
It's raining again. I'm not complaining as we have lots of water in our dams. It just makes it hard to get clean clothes because I hate using the dryer. I do have a small clothes line in the garage which gets a good working out.
Heidi, you made me laugh out loud. I probably would think about the stun gun too if my hubby did some of the things that IH has done to you in the last 24 hours.
I have the day off and will be heading down the street to the doctors for my 12 monthly check up. I also want to have a tetanus booster. I thought I would wait to have breakfast in case I need to have blood tests. I can get them done today and eat later.
I might take Shaun out for lunch today, since it's just the two of us at home.

I just compromised my back something fierce. The calf born this morning fell in the pond and couldn't get out. I had to climb down the 3 foot embankment and lift her out. (most of the sides of the pond are much lower or even level with the ground) Mama is drying her off now. She weighed about 85 pounds and I'm only supposed to lift a max. of 5 pounds right now.

Heidi, sorry about Chili and all the trouble IH caused you.
Glad to hear that Rolanda seems to be doing OK. Look forward to hearing another update.
Suzy, the FCAT (Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test) is used to determine if a student is on grade level and also to determine the school grade. The kids are tested in reading and math in grades 3-10. They are tested on writing and essay in grades 4, 8 & 10. They are tested in science in grades 4, 8 & 11. A social studies component is supposed to be added in a few years. I have students that get straight A's and are very smart but freeze on the test. I have students who can barely add but take lucky guesses and score well. This test can be used to retain a kid. Luckily there are alternate assessments we can give in order to promote a child who deserves it.

Heidi, really think IH has surpassed himself. RIP Chili.
Julie, Zusy and Brenda when I copied and pasted the link it added 0% in between the o and f took me ages to work it out.
Good vibes for Rolanda.

Hello, Everyone! I'm here for a few minutes, so I'm not sure how far I will be able to read.
HI, Gail, Heidi, Suzy, Theresa, June, vdV, Vicki, Brenda, Tami the Troublemaker, Broni, and anyone I've missed.
Oh, dear, Heidi, when IH doesn't want to do something, he really botches the job, doesn't he. Would it be easier to get ALL of the cows and their calves back to the birthing pasture so that moms can feed and protect their babies? I hope he hasn't made SIGNIFICANT extra work for you, though it sounds like he has! It's probably too late tonight, but can you have Robert work tomorrow to try to undo the mess? I hope all the cows and calves make it through the night! I also hope you didn't overdo and make your back worse instead of better. (Do you have the stun gun charged?)
Suzy, it looks like Ally has made a decision. If her singing teacher is going into the Navy, does that mean the the PRIDE group will dissolve? Is that why Ally pursued singing in the school group?
A bit of shared experience for you Suzy: Our D's played their instruments exceedingly well. We saw some of that "stage mother" behavior at the music school where they studied, as well as students who were prima donnas. Hubby and I encouraged our D's to do as well as they could, but didn't GUSH about their wonderful abilities and accomplishments. I don't advise being the stage mother or gusher over your child, but be sure she knows how proud you are of her and her accomplishments. Now that our D's are young adults, we find out that their self-confidence isn't nearly as strong as it should be and they question their abilities. They are probably still in the top 10 to 15% of people who play the same instrument as they do, but did not pursue solo careers. You don't need to be a stage mother and Ally doesn't need to be a diva, but provide plenty of opportunity to discuss what you see and what she sees and share how you both feel about it. There are people like Paul Potts and Susan Boyle who are amazing and were luckily discovered. There are many people like them who will never be discovered, but may easily be as happy or even happier than they are. It IS a very difficult profession. If she decides it is what she wants to do with her life, she needs to be aware of that, so maybe seeing some of the stage mother types is good for her. Your love and support are extremely important for her! (stepping off soap box now!)
Theresa, I hope the babysitting went well today, and hope the tests tomorrow go well! Hopefully you only need to do the fasting blood test once per year! (Our annual physicals, including the fasting, are coming up in a couple of weeks. Sometimes we end up with an appointment at 10 or 10:30, but luckily we're at 8 and 8:45 this year.)
Suzy, thanks for checking FB for info on Rolanda! It helps to know that she is not in pain and things apparently went well for her! I apologize about the space in the web site information about the glacier. I didn't even tak

Have decided to do the blood tests Monday instead of tomorrow. I have to do these fasting blood tests every three months.
My husband said the same thing you did about the weather, we're just being teased and we're bound to get a good storm before the end of the month.
As you can see I postponed my chores. It doesn't take much to distract me.
I will be spending part of this weekend getting my income tax stuff ready. Being self-employed there's all kinds of facts and figures I have to gather.

Julie... the problem with that plan is that the cows with their calves don't want to go back in the calving pasture. And some of the cows that haven't calved yet want to go back into the woods and calve in hiding. Besides not being able to find them at night, they won't get tagged before they can outrun me. If there IS an emergency, we could lose a cow. IH was just home... before he left for a goat auction... and he's been told that he'll be doing ALL the nighttime cow checks now. I had forgotten that the gate to the back pasture is also open, so the cows can now get back to the back 10 acre pasture, with a 5 acre woods in it, and a creek running through it. That means nearly 50 acres to walk to check cows at night now. Much harder than checking a flat 12 acre pasture next to the house with no hiding places.
