I'm off to bed. The tractor mechanic will probably be here first thing in the morning. The 4WD is acting up BADLY. Plus I've been smelling something burning. I will probably have to borrow my little tractor that I sold to Don, so I can feed cows until this one is repaired. OK, it's little, but very strong. I regret selling it.

I hate it when I thought I commented earlier and I didn't!! Must have been called away and lost the plot. Happens - well, to me anyway.
Togs is togs here in Qld - must be a Qld/NSW term.
Broni - I said it on FB and I'll say it here. Anything else I can do for tomorrow? I can come early if you need help. PS - Got the cake - it is huge, yummy, full of calories and I just hope Kerrie doesn't get the same one!

Gekko all,
Gail, I met a man with Parkinsons at the hospital the other day, he was there for speech therapy and didn't look any older than 51 himself. He told me that in the past he shook so badly he couldn't get out of a chair or pick himself up off the floor, but he'd had an operation - he doesn't shake at all, I couldn't tell he had Parkinsons until he told me. He has a heart pacemaker and a couple of electrodes in his head. It was amazing to see!

Hi everyone ... oh, ok, Gekko!
Hope you're all well.
Gail, have a great trip - we'll miss you.
Been working in the garden today and I'm a bit tired! "Hard rubbish" collection coming up, so we've been going through the junk, pruning, tidying, generally cleaning up. Stabbed by roses, scraped on branches ... but it's looking good! (The garden, I mean!)
Mmm, we used to wear "togs", or "swimming togs", but my Mum was a foreigner (Sydney!) My kids always laughed at me for using the wrong words - mostly I think we wear "bathers". Much too confusing, so we don't swim much any more!
Hope you all have a great day/evening. :)

Good vibes to Al, MizT and Joy...and the rest I have not mentioned.
Thanks Cyn for the offer, but much happier just stressing out...on a better note think I have things under control except 'he who has no idea!'
Oh Well!
Come over early if you like, we can start early hehe!
Togs is also a Victorian term, not the period but the state!
Heidi, hope the tractor behaves.
Yes and Gekko to you all.

No, the Victorian period term would have been swimming costume, meaning a dress and pantaloons but still shocking the establishment by showing, and I blush here, an ankle!
My grandmother was in the first group of women photographed on a Melbourne Beach dressed as above. She was also a suffragette (sp?). Go Granny!!

Morning all.Back to the togs discussion. I live in warm area that attracts a lot of tourists in the winter. There is nothing more disgusting than an oversized, Northern male who is pale white from not getting any sun stuffing himself in a speedo. I refer to them as "beached whales." It might be mean but that is what they remind me of.

Cyn, I know Macquarie Uni has micro fish of all newspapers. I have looked up some Adelaide papers back in the 1850's.
Safe travelling Gail.

Went and saw 'The King's Speech' today. Great movie. I went by myself. Going to daughter's "farm" tomorrow. Mainly to do some jobs for her. Guess we will take Laura as her mother's legs are in a bad way after all the treatments.

CynB, yes the Melbourne State Library would definitely have the newspapers, but whether they would have copies in Qld I don't know ... if you know the date you could probably ask for a copy, but you may need to get someone to look it up for you. Haven't been for a long time, so I'm not sure what the system is now.

Thanks everybody for the info. I seem to remember that our State Library has microfiche of Qld newspapers but whether they have Melbourne ones I don't know. Date would have been early 20th century - Granny was born in Bendigo in 1880, after her father died they all moved to Melbourne and were there at Federation 1901, she didn't marry until 1913. So it could have been anywhere in that period. Gail - her name was Ellen McKie - I don't think it's a problem telling that here. She's long gone! She was always very proud of her feminist stance in those days. (I really don't know how she had my Mum for a daughter, who was not a feminist, always let Dad be the 'head' of the family and make decisions and she was always dreadfully afraid of authority!)

The cake is in the oven. I hope it turns out. It called for 1/3 cup of oil, and I didn't have any, so I substituted soft margarine. Once it's out, I'll try to feed hay to the horses.

Morning all,
Cyn, When hubby and I were out yesterday we saw a picture of a row of women standing on a beach in 'swimming costumes', I don't think they were quite covering enough to be the picture you were looking for though. If I see it again I'll take a photo of it so you can decide..

Cyn, There is a site called 'Picture Australia' which has copies of archive photos stored in the libraries etc throughout Australia. I tried looking for bathers on Melbourne beaches but could not find anything like what you described.
It is a great site and I can spend hours looking at some of the old photos.

Don't think that will work either due to the more, but it is a group of six women on the beach at Sorrento in 1909.
Visit teh State Library of Victoria site, and type in swimming costumes into the search engine, it is the 9th photo reference that comes up.

Heidi, glad supper went well last night. What are cardamoms? I didn't know that mango juice could help with acid reflux or heartburn. I will have to try it some time. The over the counter medications that you can take before a meal just don't work for me. Hope Gil enjoys supper and the cake you made for him! Happy Birthday Gil.
MizT, glad your monthly budget got a boost. Thinking of you and Al.
Guess I've missed Gail, but I hope she has a great time!!!
