Let me know if you want some salted goat and sheep hides. IH keeps saving them, but doesn't know what to do with them. Of course, shipping them to the other side of the planet could be prohibitive in cost.

Cows have LONG tongues, as I'm sure you know, Heidi. Your story about Sassy licking the vets neck reminded me of our daughters (probably age 4 and 6 or 5 and 7 being licked by calves at our friends' farm!

What does one do with salted cowhides or salted goat or sheep hides for that matter - other than stack them on pallets, as eaa said?

They get tanned for leather, Julie. Ever hear of leather?
That reminds me of a funny story. I was going on a visit to see my grandmother shortly before she passed away. Two days before I was to leave, I was gifted with an orphan lamb... a wool lamb. I couldn't leave it behind for IH to care for, so I took it with me to Wisconsin. I stayed with my sister and her family, including a preschooler. I offered to take the lamb to his preschool. Well, the entire school was thrilled and every class of little ones and their teachers came over to pet the lamb. None of them had ever seen a newborn lamb before. One of the teachers came up, petted him and said..... wait for it..... "Wow! This feels almost like wool!" Needless to say, I cracked up, she thought about what she said and turned beet red.

Yes, Heidi, I have heard of leather. In fact. the in-laws of the principal of my school when I retired were involved in leather production - in Kentucky. I think they have retired now. I just hadn't thought about the "salted hides." As I think about it now, I suppose the hides might be salted to help clean and dry them? I really don't know the process - other than there are some pretty caustic chemicals involved.

They're salted to preserve them until they can be tanned. We tend to accumulate them one or two at a time, so they have to be stored until we have a loads worth.

Of course, IH had 3 big pallets of them in the barn nearest the house for over a year. He finally admitted to me that he had no place to take them. I promptly dragged them out of the barn with my tractor and threw them away. He's back to saving them, but at least they're out of my sight now.

Do you need to ship them far, or is there a company near you that tans leather, Heidi?

When I say big pallets, I mean that there were over 100 hides on each pallet.

Oops, I guess your post right above mine must answer the question. If you threw out 3 pallets of hides, there must not be a place near you that tans them.

Part of the reason that I threw them away is that IH skimped on the salt. They were partially rotted, and of no use to anyone.

Do you need to have a minimum number of hides before you can take them to be tanned? I assume it's a mighty expensive process.

Why am I NOT surprised that IH might have skimped on the salt?

Sorry - I forgot about the snow you're getting, Heidi! Maybe it will stop and the clouds move on. The moon on fresh snow is also spectacular!

Another funny IH story. We had some young trees that needed fertilizing. I bought a 50 lb. bag of fertilizer and told IH to spread it around under the trees. I came back outside about 10 minutes later and and caught IH doling out the fertilizer with a TEASPOON!!! There was a shovel sitting next to the bag where I left it.
