Animal rescuers in the UK say two puppies have been saved after being kicked and burnt by a gang of up to ten boys.
The attack was seen by a passer-by, who apparently chased the group away, then handed the dogs to the Royal Society for the Protection of Cruelty to Animals.
She is quoted as saying, "I just could not believe the cruelty being shown by these kids. If I hadn't turned up, I think they would have burned the dogs alive."
Jean Spencer, from the RSPCA in Rochdale, told the BBC,
"A member of the public saw what was happening and chased the boys away and rescued both the pups and brought them to us.
"They had a small bonfire going and as she walked over towards them she could hear Guy yelping. She went running over, they dropped the puppies and ran off."
It's thought the gang was passing the puppies, Cinders and Guy, over a bonfire.
Cinders has singe marks on her head.
Officers are appealing for anyone who knows more about the attack to come forward.
The dogs are thought to be about seven weeks old, and have gone to a shelter to help them find a new home.

Hello ladies, I quite often read what is happening with you all and have been following Heidi's saga (poor thing). I haven't joined you as I do most of my sudokuing at work and only have time to read comments - rarely post and rarely do the puzzles anymore.
Occasionally I have a day off work and then have more time but can't join in consistently.

Suzy I'm sorry to hear about Ally's arm. I've been there and done that with #1 - broke his wrist twice in 3 months at the beginning of grade 8. The second time he had it plated. Most embarrasing to go back to hospital to be greeted by the othopedic surgeon like a good friend. His folder at the childrens hospital had over 20 xrays before he broke the wrist the second time!

Oh Viv, that's awful - kids that are cruel to animals can grow up to be psychopaths!

Bit steamy here in Brissie at the moment, isn't it Vicki? But I am not complaining - compared to what Heidi and Susan are coping with and the extreme heat and possibility of bushfires that the southern states faced last week - we are doing well.

I don't know Cynthia - I'm still at work and in no hurry to leave the air-con. Although it is quite warm in our warehouse. I have tomorrow off work and don't think I'll enjoy the humidity. Chermside shopping centre - here I come!

Going out this evening to see my grandson Lachlan get invested (is that the correct word?) into Scouts - he has been a cub in 2008 and now his leaders think he's mature enough to go up to scouts. Hubby went through the scout movement from when he was 5 to becoming a leader in his teens, so he's very proud the Lachlan is following in his footsteps.

Vicki - just looked at the BOM website - our temps are going to rise steadily to 33 on Wednesday.
On the plus side, despite having used our air-con a lot in recent weeks and despite all the publicitity about the rise in tariffs for power, we got our quarterly bill and it's only $5 more than this time last year. No complaints!

Good on you Lachlan. My boys were never interested in joining scouts - they don't play computer games there. They did karate, little athletics and eventually settled on soccer (both indoor and out), along with swimming lessons and squad in summer.

Don't worry Vicki, Lach is into his computer games as well plus golf and AFL. Don't ask me how a true-blue Queenslander is into AFL and not league but there you have it! Sorry Victorians.

My son's 3 girls are all into Rugby League - 2 Broncos and 1 Titans - much to her father's disgust. The middle one Emily goes to all the games with her father.
Speaking of my son, he is flying to Sydney tomorrow to go to some Top Gear thing that is on. There's got to be more to do in Sydney that that!!

I'm thinking weather-moderating thoughts for everyone presently: warmer for the southern (and much of the northern) US for Heidi, Becky, MizT, Tami, Stella, etc. Would like to send some snow to Vici. I'm thinking cooler thoughts for the DUGs and less rain for Susan. Wouldn't it be wonderful if rain fell when and where it was needed?

June, Ally has two different slings and neither of them are any good - her opinion. Her cast is very thick and goes so far up her arm I think it is just going to be impossible for her to be comfortable. I have hopes that she will get a new one next Thursday that is not quite as invasive. Did you check out the photo? She has 'boards' of plaster underneath the plaster! I'm also working out that I need to get her an extra dose of pain killers in the afternoon. The gap between the lunch time dose and the dinner time dose is too long and she ends up in pain at bed time. Saturday she is singing at 6.20pm so it would be kind of nice if she wasn't in pain while she did that too...

I spoke to Susan tonight. She has been seriously sleep deprived and is just starting to catch up. We played 'there must be something good to come from this' and came up with a few things, including no mail = no bills, no school = good for kids, not for Mums. There are more but they escape me right now... Susan has said that if you didn't get a copy of her photos and would like them, to let me know and I can send you a copy...

Today was one of my best and worst days. I got to speak to CP then Victoria then Suzy!!!! They made my day. The emails, PMs and messages left on my page have been great. The last of the water left our house nearly 2 hours ago, but we have an unbelievably dirty, slimy mess to clean up. I have blisters on blisters from the broom already. We've had 35 rainy days this year, totalling 1786.2 mm (70.3") with heavy rain predicted. Oh joy! Flooding is such fun.

In between trying to convince a 12 year old that things would be okay even if she can't do absolutely everything for herself, a couple of really nice things happened too. I connected with my niece via facebook for one. It turns out she had been embarrassed to get in touch with me because she had been slack. Sooooo glad we connected! She is getting married! He looks nice in his photos... not the same ideologies as I have, but hey, that's what makes the world go round!

News story of the day... for chocoholics...

Use of chocolate in what is now the United States may go back 1,000 years, scientists say.

Evidence of chocolate has been found in a canyon in the southwest state of New Mexico, the earliest indication of the tasty substance north of Mexico.

But the nearest cacao plantation would have been more than 1,600km away, so importing the material would have been a major undertaking, Crown said.

Now that's a chocolate addiction!!!

Okay, explain this... last night Daddy told Ally to prank us with her phone if she needs us once she is in bed. I was pranked a half dozen times last night. I went in to check on her earlier tonight and she asked me why I hadn't heard her pranking me. I can't find my mobile so Daddy suggested she prank him instead. No pranks!!!!!!!!!!! It's not fair! Stomp my feet!

Maen Sudoluland! I am up early. Sharing the bed with a restless kitty and need for the little room woke me fore I was ready. COLD here this morning, I can take a few degrees of warmth from the DUGs that are too warm. Oh and the low humidity here too! I am boiling water on stove to raise indoor humidity, my nose is sooo dry. So a few percentage points of humidity would be welcome.

I am upset with my ih, notice lower case letters, he is an apprentice to Gil I think hehehe. Last night, he was going to his office to answer e-mail and to listen to music. Much better that out there than in here where I was getting ready for bed. Dishwasher was running, so I asked him, when you come in, please set the kitchen faucet to drip both hot and cold water (yes it is cold enough we have to drip water to keep it from freezing, and are advised over the news to do so). I could not regulate the drip with dishwasher running. Got up this morning to find kitchen and points beyond have no cold water! I am not a happy camper today! Temps should moderate and it should thaw later, but . . . . I set the hot to a slow drip, there is still enough time and cold to freeze that line.

Luckily one bathroom is flushable! and I do not have sewage spewing up in my back yard, so all in all, this is not a problem, I can handle it and only one more frigid night to deal with, then warm again!

OH, an interesting note I read. It has been cold enough here if individual homes did not drip water, many places the larger feeder water lines would freeze and shut off water to thousands of homes! Of course the water authority is happy for us to drip water to solve their problems, cause we pay for that water being dripped!

OH SUSAN, sorry you are being paged so often by Ally and Dad gets none. Hopefully that is because Ally went to sleep, poor dear!

The demands on Mom reminds me of when my oldest daughter cut her foot severely. It got a tendon, and so nearly severed it, hanging together by a thread, she could not set foot on the floor for 9 weeks. Luckily she was 5, and I could lift her, unluckily she was 5 and heavy! She crawled around a bit to play, but I was still afraid she would put pressure on those internal stitches. she would loose function of that foot permanently if that tendon tore loose!

So after a few days, I had to think of something. I asked her father about renting a wheel chair for her, he did not think it was needed. So I found her wheeled horsey, a riding toy appropriate for a toddler. By sitting side saddle, she could push herself around with the good foot. Saved a lot of lifting and moving her about as she played.

BOY that was a long time ago!
