Today is Oaks day here in Melbourne,
or other wise known as Ladies day
at the giddyups,
so another dress up day at work.
and we have races too,
our maintenance man made us some horses, they stand about a foot in height.
that have numbers, colors and names,
residents buy these horses and then with the roll of the dice they move forward on a grid that we mark out with tape.
they then win a prize so much fun had by all.
huge afternoon tea and lots of music.

Hi, All! Just popping in for a mo before the daily slinging of food.

It's great seeing you here again, Dino! We missed you.

Wow! Mary/Bibra Lake and Mary/Manly, are both back, as is Brenda! You have been missed.

Belated Happy Birthday to your hubby, Susan!

I hope your internet problems get sorted out soon, MizT!

Hi, Gail, we missed you for a bit. It's good to hear that your mom's tests came out ok! Having a visiting nurse should relieve some of your worries.

Brenda, it's good to hear that Celia has returned home from the hospital.

Broni, I haven't read yet about results from tests, but hope the news is good!

Lizzy, so far it sounds as if Sammy is doing better, and that is good news!

Suzy, what a good idea for us to share the race!thanks for the race.

Rolanda, I hope you enjoyed the weekend caravan excursion!

Stella, I hope all went well during your VERY busy weekend!

Bean, what a cute little sprout avatar! I should have known botany was an interest.

Mamacita and Heidi, our guy won!

Hello to all those I haven't directly mentioned.

Hey Broni

not too sure if I would call it great news,
as the not knowing or back to square one
would drive me batty...............
I know Im batty already, but does this mean they can rule out a heap of possibilities ???
OH mine is on Monday, did you have to drink two bottles of FLEET, last time I had it done it was different stuff, so wondering which one you had, and how bad it was ?????

We have Funnel Web Spiders here, too. They're shy around people and only are dangerous to their prey. Do you think that they're 6 foot tall maneaters, mariana???

Heidi, I just read about your rabbit. I'm so sorry to hear the news, but amazed at his longevity. We had a couple of dwarf rabbits around the house when our children were at home. They were all litter trained, so could be out of the cage for a while each day.

I would be scared of a

White-tailed Spiders have a dark reddish to grey, cigar-shaped body (males about 12 mm, females up to 18 mm long) and dark orange-brown banded legs. The grey dorsal abdomen bears two pairs of faint white spots (less distinct in adults) with a white spot at the tip; the male has a hard, narrow plate or scute on the front of the abdomen. The two common species in southern Australia, Lampona cylindrata and L. murina, are similar in appearance and have overlapping distributions in the south-east. Their bites have been controversially implicated in causing severe skin ulceration in humans.

Not here of course, just had enough machine feeding and plant potting for a while.

Liz, for a minute there, I wasn't sure what you were talking about saddling up...the spiders, the wooden horses...or the maintenance man!!!

mariana... spiders generally won't hurt you unless you threaten them first. The most dangerous spider in the US is the Brown Recluse. They like to live in dark areas of our houses, like in curtains, the folds of towels, etc. Their bite is VERY dangerous. They can be identified by a marking on their thorax that looks exactly like a violin. They're shaped like their close relative, the Black Widow.

We get huntsmen and their cousins, the wolf spiders in this place all the time...well mainly warmer weather. My youngest is totally bug phobic, especially spiders and she seems to be the one that spots them first. She's a little more blasé about it all now, but when we first moved here, she used to walk through the house funnily, craning her neck to check for them in all their known haunts! Poor bugger got trapped in the shower once with one on the shower screen...didn't notice until she was IN the shower! Now THAT was a Psycho scream!!!

We can get funnel-webs here but most common is the red-back. Like to live in outdoor furniture, kids playgrounds, under bbq's etc. A bite from them can be extremely painful and can hospitalise. My brother who lives in a rural area west of Brissie has been bitten twice! The first time he was hospitalised. The second time he must have had some immunity, it wasn't so bad.

I've always believed that spiders are our friends They catch disease carrying insects, but I admit to not like being startled by a tarantula on my pillow or on my coffee cup (hence the blow torch incidents).

I'm with you Heidi. I'd rather have the odd huntsman in my house than other horrible insects like - my greatest fear and loathing - a cockroach (my skin crawls just typing the word). Between huntsman spiders and geckos, we don't get much in the way of insects in our house.

CynB.... That's the one that makes my skin crawl, too. I would rather have anything else in my house. But I don't discourage the spiders much. They're my first line of defense.
