You should see our bet on the Cup. A whole bunch of people at hubby's work put in a total of $3358. Everyone put in their guesses for who would win the Trifecta or the First Four. They averaged them out and in the trifecta we win if any one of 8 horses comes in first, and one of 16 horses comes in second, and any horse at all comes in 3rd. That ticket cost $2400!!

Hi Suzanne too.

I'm wondering why there would be public outcry about the last Thursday.

I have no idea Suzy. You know people, they will bicker about anything.
My niece just sent me an instant message to tell me she got an 80 on her chemistry test. She studied all last week and was worried. Chemistry is not her strong point. I am really proud of her. She is in her second year of university and goes to a small school near Boston.

Tami, if Chemistry is not her strong point she must do brilliantly in her other subjects!

Tami, why do they call it Black Friday?

The grandies are in bed (hopefully to stay). This is the week that my SIL starts his later shift (11:00 AM to 11:00 PM), so I don't get the girls off to school, but I do help put them to bed.

I found two versions of why it is called black friday. The first makes the most sense to me. It is one of the busiest shopping days of the year, putting retailers "in the black." In accounting, a negative or deficit is written in red ink and a positive or surplus is written in black ink.

Another version has the Philadelphia police department coining the term to describe the huge crowds that go shopping on that day.

My niece has always done well in school but it does not come easy for her. She needs to put in a lot of effort.
I am going to say goodnight now. Tomorrow is a teacher planning day (pupil-free day). It is election day and a lot of schools are used as polling places. They don't want to kids to be on campus when a lot of strangers are also on campus. It has been hinted that we might get out early. I don't think I will be here in the morning so I will see you all tomorrow night. Hope everyone has a great day and

Loved watching the 'Virtual' Melbourne Cup. The handicapper selected the best winners from the last 150 years of the Cup, and experts in the field looked at all the stats and submitted their beliefs as to how the race would have been run. It was no great surprise that Pharlap won, though he was stuck in the middle of the field for most of the race, and my personal favourite, Makybe Diva came in third. She is a fav of mine as she won three Cups in a row, and I personally met her once she had been retired. A great honour.

So, depending on how you look at it, Zavite was last or Descarado was last. Zavite was the last to actually cross the finish line, but Descarado did not finish the race. I don't know why.

Total $3358 Broni. Obviously not all our money! $1 a week from hubby's pay to be a part of it. If they'd picked the 4th place horse (and they had 16 horses in that section so must have picked almost everything but the right one) then we would be sharing in over $7000.

I am glad that I didn't have a bet, as none of the horses I picked did any good. Tomorrow I will see if anything in the sweep made me rich for my few dollars. Good night all.

Morning all, another very cool, crisp autumn day here. I'm off to take care of the outside feral cats. Hope to be back later.

I had 4 horses in sweeps but non got a place. Ken had the winner in one sweep. we did win our game of bowls, had a nice lunch and a fun day. Then I picked up Laura and that 1 1/2 hour drive to feed the horses etc. I am still at my daughters and will take Laura home later today.(after feeding the animals again)

I didn't have any money on the race (so I lost nothing) but I would have put a little on Zipping. Maybe. The problem with races like this is the size of the field. Just too many horses out there. Because of the huge crowd, horses can't run true to form, and luck plays too big a part in the finish. In other words, the best horse rarely wins, unless it's a super horse. And those are few and far between.

At last I have finished knitting a Christmas present for my sister in law. That's one off the list. That list keeps getting longer while my attention span for knitting is getting shorter at the moment.
The Melbourne Cup sounds a bit like our Grand National, lots of horses and any one of them could win. It is the only race we ever have a bet on.

Checking in without reading. I am on my way to bed here at 11:30 am. I took AL to hospital last night, temp 104. Chemo knocked out his immune system, he found some bug, and whammo, very sick very quickly. We were in ER from 7 till midnight, then to a nice room in IMC ( intermediate care)with a recliner and a pull out bed for me. They think pneumonia. His brother is there now with him, and I am home to get a nap, a shower, and pick up some things he needs. He is a very sick little boy today, prayers, vibes, thoughts needed. Going back before dark, I hate driving after dark. See you all when I can.

Hugs to all with extras.

I think Suzy's message says it all, MizT. Please take care of yourself too ... you will need all your strength to help Al through this. At least there is a recliner in the room so you could perhaps doze off now and then.

MizT, hope they can get the antibodies to work quickly. Big problem with Chemo is the side effects and one is knocking the body resistance to other bugs. A very agonizing time for you both. LOTS AND LOTS OF HUGS AND PRAYERS.
