Neil, It's early morning here near Chicago - the sun hasn't come up yet and the day hasn't changed over yet. Looks to be a nice day after a chilly start - but Chicago weather is always a series of ups and downs. I'm getting a kick out of the price of Super Bowl Tickets - over a thousand dollars now. I'm not really a fan of the Packers - being from Chicago - but I may even check it out. Enjoy your day, Mary

Hi Neil, in response to your cry for help, it is possible to cheat and view the photo without solving the puzzle - some of which are pretty daunting.
Just click on the 'Show Solution' button which is just below the puzzle, then the idea is to remove one number and replace it again. So, if you click on the number nine (for example) in the completed puzzle, it will be replaced with either a number one or a blank square. Then go back to the row of optional numbers just below the puzzle and click on the number you 'removed' and put it back in the blank square in the puzzle. Behold - a photo emerges slowly from the puzzle!
I do hope I have explained the procedure properly, just let me know if I have confused you.

Hello Neil - I just read your comment on the "tough" sudoku page about the iron ore truck. I took this photo last year with my grand-daughters in front of it to show how huge the truck is. It is at a park for tourists & visitors to see in the north/west town of Wickham where one of my daughters lives with her family. The town was a satellite town of the 60's when there was a big mining boom in the Pilbara area where it is very rich in iron ore. My son-in-law works on the trains that deliver the ore from the mining towns to the port to be shipped out.
Cheers
Anne

Thank you, Neil! Makes me feel a little normal! It has been a pain in the neck spelling it different because most spell it the usual way.
Where is Hertfordshire? Near Hereford?

Hi Niel.I aggree with you that UPs go to 49 on today's tough. I think Mathman and Sotir probably miscounted. For step 2. , I found :"wherever you place 4 in the middle left box, a8 and b1 always become 5".Regards, Alfred.

Hi Neil.I think Sotir is right today in needing step 2.Step 3 relies on d4 becoming 9 when a4=6.d4 (without e5=7) can =6/7/9.So for d4 to =9 when a4=6,e5 must already =7.BTW, at UP 40,if d1=8,the 18 rectangle at be89 cannot be resolved.So e1=8,giving 5 more UPs,but unfortunately,this doesn't help much.These 5 only seem to be by-standers.Regards,Alfred.

Thanks Neil for offerring to help, but g1=8 (in solution),not 4.UP33 must be somewhere else.Unless Sotir miscounted.

Thanks Neil.I did miss the two quads (one is in box h7 BTW),which gives UP26.
I followed your solution up to step 7.Could you please check your conclusion to step 7? My understanding of it is: "If g7=3,e7=5=b4=g3;or if g7=5,g3=6=b4".So can't g3 still be 56?
All the best, Alfred.

Hi Neil.I only got to UP34 for the Jan. 20th. Tough(including d2=4=f6,f2=8).What are your other 2 UPs ?
I found a promising attempt in :If i2=9,b1=1;to avoid the 57 AUR at bg12,which means,if b2 is not 1,i2=7,but I couldn't find a short chain after this.Maybe your extra 2 ups might help.
Regards,Alfred.

That's one timely story of the bunny and the snake. In the U.S., Nov. 2 is a serious election day......we all need to lighten up!
