Kerrie, I have just seen your wonderful Egypt pictures! I was like being back again. Isn't it just the most amazing place? You seem to have had much better luck riding a camel than I did. Most terrifying experience of my life! lol
And you got to meet Wagdy! What a nice man he is.
While I'm here... to you and yours!

LOVED your Egypt photos! You are a brave woman - riding a camel! Being a huge Agatha Christie fan, I enjoyed seeing the picture of the Cataract Hotel. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Kerrie, I think you have chosen a very good camera - both Anne and our son have Sony cameras and they are very pleased with them. As for night photography, if you could tell me what is going wrong I might be able to help.

Kerrie, generally there are two issues with night photography - shake and exposure.
Holding the camera steady is vital. I think yours has anti-shake built in, but even if it does you would probably improve your shots if you were to lean against a wall or better still, use a tripod. There are some good, mini-tripods available and they are fairly inexpensive. I carry one around with me most of the time. The other thing you can do to keep the camera steady is use the built-in delay. I think your camera has the capacity for either 2 or 10 second delay. This means that the shutter will not operate until 2 (or 10) seconds after you press it. By using this feature you will eliminate any shake caused when you press the button.
Exposure. All cameras have a limit to the distance the flash will penetrate. In your case I think it is 3.5 metres. So the photo will get darker the further you are away from the subject. So what you do is turn the flash off, set the camera on a tripod, or a wall or anything that will hold it steady, set 2 or 10 second delay and let your camera do the calculations on how long the shutter needs to be open to get your photo. I think you will be pleasantly surprised. Practice your techniques a few times.
I have some examples in among my gallery photos .

Kerrie, further to the above, I have dug up a photo of Raffles Hotel which was taken on my first digital camera a long time ago. I have put it in my gallery. As I said in the comments, I leant hard against a gate pillar to keep the camera steady. The flash was off.
There is another photo of Hong Kong at 3.00 am about 42 lines down my gallery which was taken on a mini-tripod and a 10 second delay.
Enjoy your new camera.
