Thanks Greg for taking the time to send your best wishes to me for my birthday yesterday.
We have the opportunity to visit Canada next July, but as it is so far from Oz. we are weighing up whether or not. It would be with a group of 300 Airconditioning Dealers from Oz & NZ and would only be for a week, so feel it might be too much of a rushed trip for such a short time. Cheers Maureen

Greg, thanks for the avatar of my 'hero'! I'm in a speaking club and mentioned A.E.N and one of his quotations in MAD magazine. A senior member said that he was amazed where I sourced my material and that he won't forget my (valid) explanation of the quote.

I can't wait to quote Curley of Three Stooges fame.

Greg - your question made me laugh. That photo is taken from the Canadian side of Niagara Falls!

Maybe it's been too long since you were there?

The U.S. side has all sorts of sturdy barrier fences on its side. The Canadian side has very pretty curlicues and, just upstream from the Horseshoe Fall, a mere narrow thicket of an embankment with a sign that says "Danger: Beware of Changing Water Levels." What an understatement.

I wouldn't say the American side blocks any views. In fact, Goat Island gives you safe, immediate access to look very closely at the edge of the Falls and a bit upstream (great photos). You can even view from under/behind the Falls (though I haven't yet done that). The US just has very sturdy no-nonsense barriers everywhere to help keep crazies from going in or being pushed in.

No, the girls didn't do Maid of the Mist. I did it when I was young and got some great photos from below I kept for years. When the girls and I went, Starr was starting to crash from the 5 week adventure and didn't want to stand in lines.

We walked up and down both sides of the Falls, took lots of photo and stayed the night in Canada. I thought we'd do several things on that side before leaving then do several things en route (like the A.G. Bell homestead, etc.), but she just needed down time. And I had a knee brace and was barely up and walking after a bad knee injury, so I didn't want to go on the boat, so I didn't press the matter.

Are you familiar with Veggie Tales? I ask because there's a punchline in one episode that refers to Canada having the best side of the Falls.

uhh ... that was the punchline.
Plot: Sinister forces are trying to involve Minnesota Cuke (an animated cucumber version of Indiana Jones) in an adventurous search for Samson's hairbrush.

Samson is a peach, because peaches have hair. The hairbrush is an inside joke originating in a wildly popular Silly Song "Oh, Where is My Hairbrush.' Sing it in public and you'll make all sorts of instant friends.

A duplicitous scallion claims that certain Canadian agents are trying to gain control of both sides of Niagara Falls. Hearing this, Minnesota Cuke is puzzled and remarks: "Why? They already have the best side of the Falls."

VeggieTales are mostly 1/2 hour video episodes which are suprisingly entertaining (most of them anyway). You can find them through Netflix or from most Sunday School departments.

'King George and the Ducky' is my absolute favorite. It's a parable based on the David and Bathsheba story. I'm amazed at the producers' finesse in turning a story of adultery and murder into a hilarious account of a king who wants to add a rubber ducky to his "Bath" collection, so sends its owner off to the "pie wars" where the hapless owner is hit by one too many pies in the face and goes a bit loopy. They paint the moral "Don't be Selfish."

Each Veggie Tales episode has a Silly Song. King George and the Ducky's Silly Song is one that encourages viewers to get a handle on their fantasy thought life when they see the Silly Song singer get sucked into a hilarious soap opera story.

Another episode worth watching is the first one produced. "Where is God When I'm S-scared" ends with a fantastically entertaining song ('Oh, no, what we gonna do?') about the plot against Daniel that ends up with him being thrown to the lions, though such a violent idea is only alluded to after a bunch of very silly ideas cleverly brainstormed and rhymed in the song.

Burl and I looked forward to new episodes as much as our kids did (well, almost). Their Silly Songs collections are great. If you have grandkids of a right age they're a great set to collect along with '3-2-1 Penguin' episodes.
