I've heard that when the penal colony in Australia was in need of stonemasons (I think it was), word went back for police and courts to keep an eye out for stonemasons that could be sentenced to the penal colony, often through entrapment or exaggerated charges. Talk about "profiling." It was a legal attitude like that that cause the fledgling U.S. to declare that in this country "a person is innocent until proven guilty." Very fundamental understanding to every U.S. citizen (and there's not many of those left).

So "Botany Bay" looked like a very popular sing-along song. Does everyone learn it and sing it as a remembrance of Australia's founders? Does it get sung especially for Australia Day or some other occasion?

Shiela and CynB - guess it's us to start the Jane Austen talk. We've been distracted by the snow and an internet service slowdown that seems to be over, so now I can talk (and solve puzzles). So, how are we starting off? Have both of you read Sense & Sensibility at least once? How about the videos?

(response to Shiela) -- first things do come first! However, if you have read it (?) - and I know you've seen the ET movie - perhaps we can post a few comments as to themes or fav or least fav scenes or how horrible or wonderful or unbelievable characters are? Or not, I could just talk to myself since S&S isn't CynB's fav Austen, either. But last time I reread it, I reread it critically and I did find some nice things to discuss there ... Oh, well, I'll collect some thoughts together this week regardless, as I've always wanted to put together a small study on all six Austen novels.

Thanks for the list of Australian songs. I'll slowly be looking them up. (I don't have a lot of internet connection right now. It's too little for media -- or I'd change my you tube video.)
My middle daughter's doing a unit on "traveling to Oz," so I'll pass the music on to her instructor, too (we usually homeschool, but this is a co-op class for this semester taught by a former teacher and frequent traveler down under). We'll make sure Mirusia's you tube gets seen by a few more people.

PS I've been enjoying you photos as jigsaws! Haven't have a lot of time to spend on site recently, but I try to do the 3 puzzles at jigsaw! After that I usually get some reading at sudoko but often get interrupted & then don't get back!
