Sharon - a lot of the "old gang" that have been working on the float for years are BRUINS. Some of the people who come to work on the float - only come during decorating week. Some have moved away and come back almost every year (like me), others were vacationing here and had stopped by gave a hand and now make it an annual vacation stop.
This year is their 29th float. While I was a Charter Member (and still am a member), I didn't work on the first 2 floats. Came down on the 31st after being up in June Lake for Christmas and helped out at the Floatique. The following year and every year after, while I was working - I took off the week between Christmas & New Years - to work on the float. Since I moved up here, I have maybe had 4 Christmas (including this year) that I did not got down south and work on the Float. That means I have worked on 23 of 29 floats + 1 worked on in high school for the Lutheran Hour.
The first two day of decorating week (26th & 27th)are like homecoming or class reunions - a renewing of friendships. If I'm down there visiting mom (or when Dad was in the VA - my every other month trip down), I would attend any fundraiser they were having - Happy Hour, Dining Out, BBQ, etc.
Called down to Float Site, this evening during the party - wished them well.

Sharon: The grand kids may like to see the float. The best time to see it - is at judging. There are 3 judgings. At float site on the 30th at 1:50 PM & the 31st at 1:50 PM - the last judging is at 3 AM on Orange Grove Blvd on the 1st. They will definetly being running the animation on the 31st's judging. The float will be moved out on to the street, should be almost completely decorated and they will run the full animation for tht judging. On the 30th's judging, the float is still under the freeway & some of the animation may be ran. The kids will love it. The float is under the freeway overpass at the corner of Foothill Blvd & Hampton in La Cañada. There are tour guides to help people all day & most of the evening.
If you go over there, you may want to visit Descanso Gardens while in the area. There are lots of things to delight the kids. On Sundays they have a small train ride.

Shosho I do not recall where I get all my little rituals from. Growing up the only ritual was staying up past 12 and watching the big ball.
I do not have any pine at the moment. Though my Christmas tree is artifical pine--oh and I have some pinesol--would those work? What is the purpose of the pine at the door?
You are more than welcome to come over for cabbage and black eyed peas which each of them have a new penny in each pot. Generally, I do not leave the house on New Years day, because I do not want to be going all year. New Years eve, sadly I am generally by myself. Hubby has tried a few times to stay up, but has yet to make it. Girlie-girl is a minor terror if she stays up past 8:30 and I have a strict policy "Never wake the girl."
I hope you have a wonderful New Year, and please share any more traditions you have.
PS--what is the alter for?

Shoshu, you make me laugh...
No one else commented at all. I am a great lover of watching people and their behavour. I am 40 next month and not enjoying the wrinkle stage. but all said - once I am past that and have learned to live with the aging process I know I am going to have so much fun. I remember going to seaworld and waiting in line with my friend for the train which circles the park. We saw a group of old ladies coming and I said to her, I bet these ladies wont line up but push straight in front of the 20 kiddies waiting patiently. True to my statement which still makes my friend laugh they did exactly that. Right up to the front, past the kids and onto the prime position of the train. This is one of my many, many observations. I cant wait to be old.... I just hope I am spritely... I know I will be a cunning bugger : )
Thanks, luv ya

Dear Shosho: Like you, I felt desertion pains, especially when I started the day and was the only person around - until Dorthea and Keith thankfully turned up. That morning on Google, I accidentally found a premature route through the site's archives. At first I wondered if GMo had nuked everybody from her cruising broomstick and that I was the only survivor in a decimated sudokuland. I have left a bottle of 'Anti-Desertion-Feeling Pills' (ADFP) on your table here; to be taken with the magnum of gin (GIN = Great Introduction to Nirvana), alongside it.

Shosho, thanks for your message on my page. the short answer to your question is yes, we all make some blocks and it is worked on by more than one mailed around the country and on occasion, the world! The long answer follows, if interested.
We quilt together by each making a certain number of the assigned blocks. One person selects the block and designs the quilt. this is usually the person who will put it together ( set the blocks). the person putting blocks together on the two lips quilt pictured asked me to do the design.
Blocks are mailed to the one to sew blocks together. if everyone did not send thier blocks for some reason, a call goes out for more blocks, till we have enough. There are a few of us semi retired quilters lucky enough to stay home and be able to help fill in for extras.
After the blocks are set, the quilt top is sent to whomever the quilter will be. Another couple people have already bought or sent money to buy the batting and the baccking, the 2 major expenses since noone had to buy MUCH of the fabric for thier blocks.
this person quilts the quilt, by hand or machine, thier choice, Then sends it on to another to do the binding. Yet another person has been making a label for it, and at some point the label and qult get together, and it is attached to quilt by person binding it.
THEN quilt is either given or mailed to the recipient. We are all always nervous when a quilt top or a quilt is in the mail, would be soo hard to replace it.
You saw the quilt draped over the bench? I both designed and set that one, then after it was completely finished, it came back to me, and i was able to present in person to this lady! that was soo fun. We live in same state and she works about 50 miles from me, so we havemet up for lunch a few times. It was such fun to be able to give her quilt in person.
Oh, the quilts are kept secret till presented, even more fun.

I do feel for the jackalope's relatives, but a feller hasta feed his own younguns, too- and you know a jackalope is fine eatin! Itfed the entire family fer two days.
As far as posing a sea turtle for pics goes, most of the photos I have are 'reality pics', taken by others as I go about my business of rehabbing the reptiles. This one
http://sudoku.com.au/PhotosBig.aspx?PID=2837&UID=9623&Go=C9-12-1991
shows Jonah's head, although he refused to put his chin up and smile for the photo. I expect Jonah to be released in April 2008, with no fanfare. Releases of educational specimens are different than are rehabs, the Florida Fish and Wildlife folks need to be assured the animal is acting normally on its first venture into wild waters. I expect Jonah to do just fine, as it is very hostile, trying to bite everything that moves- perfect attitude for a predator!

shosho, the turtles name is "Jonah" like the biblical fellow spit up by the whale, not Jonas like your student, sorry. The turtle Jonah was said to have been spit up by a baitfish into a fisherman's baitwell, that is how he got his name- he had supposedly been 'in the belly of the fish.' Seems a leap of faith to think a tiny fish could have ever swallowed a sea turtle, even a hatchling is over 2" in diameter. But it makes for a good story.
Also, Jonah must be let go in a quiet environment, with no fanfare like with our usual short-term patients. It is imperative that Fish and Wildlife agents are able to see the animal exhibiting instinctive hunting behavior, and he would not do that with a big crowd him down on the Atlantic Ocean beach. He will be released into Indian River Lagoon by a single member of our staff, with a boat containing a FWC folks nearby to assure the animal is behaving normally. After being in a tank being fed by people for his first 3 years of life, they must assure the animal is not habituated to humans. But like I said in the previous post, he is hostile and curious and bites everything in his reach, so I am sure he will do just fine. I will be sure and inform you about his release, most likely in spring of this year.

I am delighted that you are interested in learning the pipes. The best motivation is to gather with other pipers like a band and start taking lessons with them and you'll be marching right along playing Bonnie Dundee before you know it.
Be careful what you buy in selecting a practice chanter. Don't make your decision based solely on price. There is some poor equipment out there that want's to try to be what it isn't. Visit a highland supply shop either in person or on line. Visit with someone who belongs to a pipe band or even a pipe major. The best tutor books available are from the college of piping in Glasgow. Most good highland shops carry them. There are four volumes. But you still need someone to help you get started. You've got at least one in your cheering section now.

for your ongoing support. I'm usually the one to remind people to meditate! Ecie has started the long and painful path back to health. My other friend, Helen, with the dying husband is not so frightened about the future. Meanwhile i have spent the afternoon with my youngest grandchild which is excellent therapy for a heavy heart!
I have for a long time been conscious of the vast extent of suffering in this world, and also of its incredible beauty and of the great extent of kindness in the hearts of ordinary people. Maybe one day I will be wise enough to hold it all in my mind at the same time!

Sharon,
You asked about Gath's using the term widget. Actually you can add any code written for myspace comments and add it to that area and use it. On mine, the snickering dog and the bluegrass music player are added my space code. Just go out and find the code for what you want to add and have fun. You can just keep adding code for multiple entrys also. If you want, I can leave some links to code sites, if need be, just let me know.
