Poor Gus has a headache now. Any other damage?? One of the joys of living in the midwest, at least that is what this region was called. Think now they say Texas and Oklahoma are in the south, who knows. We had the RAIN it was so hard we could not see the back fence 50 feet away. A little thunder a little lightening, but no tornados. Cooled down 10 to 15 degrees, don't like that.

As you care for your mother-in-law, Jamie ...

Beatitudes for Friends of the Elderly

Blessed are they who understand
my faltering step and palsied hand.

Blessed are they who know my ear
must strain to catch what others hear.

Blessed are they who seem to know
that my eyes are dim and my wits are slow.

Blessed are they who looked away
when my coffee was spilled at the table today.

Blessed are they with a cheery smile
who stop to chat for a little while.

Blessed are they who never say,
''You've told that story twice today.''

Blessed are they who know the ways
to bring back memories of yesterdays.

Blessed are they who make it known
that I am loved and not alone.

Blessed are they who ease the days
on my journey home in loving ways.

Jamie, you're too much! Gus is getting more and more handsome! You're getting serious competition! Congrats on your son, I'm assuming he is the more handsome one.
And yes I've got a stack of papers that nag at me, too. Ouch ! Well the year is ending and my poor mentee is so relieved that she survived her first year. I'll have about a month and a half. How about you, how long of a summer will you have?

Jamie, Gus is quite the busy fellow. Relay for life, graduation, recovering from a tragic tree fall, how does he have time for everything?
We are lucky to live in Wimberley. Do you know it? Y'all come visit sometime. It's a fun weekend spot. I am a reading teacher at the primary school. I have three kids. one has a new baby, one just graduated NYU and the other is in school in NY at School of the Visual Arts. We are very poor! (lam-laughing at myself, I just made that one up).
More info than you wanted to know. Are you living in Bryan/College Station? I assume so.

Hi Jamie,

Glad to hear from you and your comments on my Basset Family. Remember, I take in all homeless Bassets in case your ever in trouble. I have vivid memories of my youth with relatives in Texas. They just started selling Big Red Pop here and I remember the icy bottles of Big Red we got in Texas and dumping a package of salted peanuts in the pop. Now big Red is in cans and a lot of the effect is gone. Have a great Memorial day.

Hi, Jamie!
I'm catching up on archives. We just got back from . . . a Princess cruise to Alaska. We flew to Seattle and did the inside passage, stopping in Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan, and Victoria, BC. We also cruised in (not all the way, unfortunately, due to lots of floating icebergs) to Tracy Arm fjord. It was our first cruise, and we enjoyed it. We chose 'anytime dining,' a big help when working around the timing of shore excursions. By the way, we are retired teachers (2 years), so understand your reaction to the arrival of summer!

Jamie, quit rubbing it in!!! I still have 3 more weeks to go! Argh!!! It's hard to cope in the classroom, when all the students have mentally gone on vacation already! I have students who have forgotten how to spell, how to write sentences, and trying to pass false info in their reports!

OMG, even your sister-in-law is luckier than me. I'm stuck until the 20th! But I have to admit, I'm in the profession because the kids make me laugh every day of my life. Today I found two of my students under the desks because they made a ridiculous mistake in their algebraic sentences. A little embarrassed. When I discovered the reason, I had a good laugh and was able to reach them today. At this age teasing goes farther than any disciplinary actions. They come out it happier and remember better for the future.

Hi, I started teaching in 1964--I was not 13! By changing schools, grade levels, principals, towns, and states, I kept going and going and going. Unfortunately by changing states, I lost years of retirement credit. That is why I had to keep going and going and going. Now, my retirement income is about $800/month higher than my take-home pay was! And... I'm not yet collecting SSI.

Jamie, Retirement in MA is figured at 80% of the average of the top three years (we don't pay into SSI, either)--if one meets the age + years of service requirement. Other benefits: no state income tax on retirement, no more costly association dues, health insurance changes from 20% of family policy to 10% of two single BCBS supplemental policies, reimbursement for cost of Medicare, and I no longer pay $100/mo. for an annuity! Due to the WEP, I cannot get all of the SSI that I deserve, but I was told by SSI that I'll get between $400 and $500--about half--if I apply at age 65y 10m. You may want to check directly with SSI because they gave me different info than the gossip in the teacher's room. Believe me, I can do a lot with that $400 or $500!

I plan to get a part-time job when I get back to FL in the fall. I am applying at a car dealership to shuttle cars. I love to drive and since this dealer has several stores throughout the state, I think this will help me get to know the geography of the state and I'll earn a couple of bucks--enough to pay a housekeeper so I don't have to do those types of chores.

I love retirement. Maybe I should make it LOVE retirement! No more alarm clocks!!!

Rats! I just lost a really lengthy discussion of shore 'excursions' to cyberspace. Sorry, Jamie! I'll try again.

Probably our favorite was the White Pass Yukon ... something railroad trip in Skagway. We were on a train that left at about 12:30, I think. Usually it goes up, stops, everyone flips over the seats and switches to the other side of the car, then comes back down (about a 2 1/2 hour ride). Because there was another train behind ours, we got to continue another 7 or 8 miles into Canada where there was a loop for the train, so we didn't need to do the flip and change sides. It was both scenic and relaxing. It's hard to imagine the railroad tracks being laid back then. In Juneau we did a 'Whale Quest' then bus ride to the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center, interesting and educational. (We didn't take the helicopter and get out ON the glacier, though my sister told us it was a must-do.) We really enjoyed the views going into Tracy Arm fjord (no additional cost), although we couldn't go all the way in to Sawyer Glacier because of MANY icebergs floating in the water. We were only in port in Victoria, B.C. for about 4 hours. We figured the best way to see anything there was on the double-decker bus tour - about 1 hour. Since we got back, a friend asked if we saw Butchart Gardens. (We didn't, though there were excursions that included it. We had a feeling that it would be too early in the growing season to see much.)

I think you'll enjoy your cruise!

Jamie, yes, that is the same Louie Bond, I meant to say 'my writer friend' not 'my writer'. I'm not really famous enough to have my own writer yet.(teehee) Do you happen to know her? that would be weird.
Love the Porch song! hopefully, they changed the last line of the last verse if they happened to sing that song for your mom's kindergarteners!(see below). (although it is my favorite description of how great it is to be a Texan!)
This old porch is just a long time
Of waiting and forgetting
And remembering the coming back
And not crying about the leaving
And remembering the falling down
And the laughter of the curse of luck
From all of those sons-of-b!tches
Who said we'd never get back up

Jamie, sorry to hear about your fathers condition. I know it is something that needs medical attention now. Please keep us updated on his condition.
I know about canceling vacation plans, last year we were going to Crete, I had to have back surgery. Were going to South Dakota this summer, I am now waiting on the surgeon to set a date to repair my knee.
I know how hard it is taking care of older parents but it is worse when they are gone.
Julie form IL mentions the White Pass train there is a picture of the train front and back on my page. We were in Skagway the first of June and it was cold, sweater and jacket cold. I don't remember how many feet elevation was but it was cold and snow on the ground. It was well worth the money.
Hope your father has the operation soon and recovers quickly.

Hi Jamie. How is your father doing? What surgery is required? I do hope it goes smoothly and that you don't have to cancel out on your Alaska cruise, but that can always be re-scheduled, so take heart. My thoughts are with you.
