Hi Eve...thanks so much for your help. We are enjoying Hawaii...less smoke and ash than California...although the rain has put a damper on some activities. I still enjoy skin diving...which doesn't matter if there's rain or not. Where should I leave my e-mail? I sure appreciate your willingness to do this for me.

Eve fantastic shot of the deer, so clear. Do you get many deer wandering close by? What a wonderful sight to have in your back garden. The most we get on a daily basis are squirrels and the odd fox although we did once have a badger that growled!!

Beautiful photo Eve. With these sort of visitors you hardly needed to go to Africa..... I did so enjoy my flit through Africa with you - it is on my must do list. Do you get visitors [like today's] very often?

Eve, you're too much! I just can't imagine how both Johnny Carson and Jack Webb could keep a straight face through out that entire skit. Although I did see that Johnny was about to lose it. Too funny!

Eve, that was beautiful. I have to cherish every moment with my younger son, I just wish he were closer. I will be going to North Carolina for Christmas my first with him in four years, either he was in training or in Iraq.
Take care of yourself. Thanks for your note.

Hi, Eve! The reason you don't see many poppies on Veterans' Day is because they are primarily worn on Memorial Day in the US (although, sadly, not in the abundance they once were). Did you see my post earlier today? I've copied it below:

Mary is right. Some people confuse Memorial Day (which honors those servicemen who died for our country) and Veterans' Day (which honors those living men and women who served in the armed forces). Here are a couple of excerpts from the US Department of Veterans Affairs website (web address is at More end of excerpts):

Q. What is the difference between Veterans Day and Memorial Day?

A. Many people confuse Memorial Day and Veterans Day. Memorial Day is a day for remembering and honoring military personnel who died in the service of their country, particularly those who died in battle or as a result of wounds sustained in battle. While those who died are also remembered on Veterans Day, Veterans Day is the day set aside to thank and honor ALL those who served honorably in the military - in wartime or peacetime. In fact, Veterans Day is largely intended to thank LIVING veterans for their service, to acknowledge that their contributions to our national security are appreciated, and to underscore the fact that all those who served - not only those who died - have sacrificed and done their duty. A complete history of Veterans Day, and why it is observed on November 11, can be found on the Veterans Day History Web page.

Q. Why are red poppies worn on Veterans Day, and where can I obtain them?

A. The wearing of poppies in honor of America's war dead is traditionally done on Memorial Day, not Veterans Day. The practice of wearing of poppies takes its origin from the poem "In Flanders Fields," written in 1915 by John McCrae. Click here to read "In Flanders Fields." For information on how to obtain poppies for use on Memorial Day, contact a veterans service organization, such as the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States (VFW) or The American Legion, as a number of veterans organizations distribute poppies annually on Memorial Day. You can find veterans groups in the Veterans Service Organization link on VA's Veterans Day web page. Veterans groups in your area can be found in your local phone book. Look in the yellow pages under "Veterans and Military Organizations" or a similar heading.

EVE, What a handsome man your father was.....Loved the poem and remember it well. I'm a bit confused by certain celebration of events however. I was taught that we remembered our dead service men and women on Memorial Day, and poppies are indeed passed out by the veterans post. Remembrance Day also honors the dead. Today, Veterans Day was set aside to honor the living service personnel, both active and inactive, and flags and other ceremonies mark this day. It seems that Jane has the same idea.

Eve, I might add a little footnote. I was told several years ago by my MIL (who was very active in VFW Auxilliary and in charge of the poppy distribution) that they could no longer use live poppies because they had been associated somehow with opiates/opium.

Hi Eve...thanks for the update. We do keep up since Linda talks to her girlfriend Sandy everyday. We are enjoying the sun and warmth and are busy moving into our new "casita". I don't miss the leaves but we sure have lots of clean-up when we get home. But...for the next 5 months, I don't have to worry about it. See ya....

Hey Eve, thanks for dropping by on my page! Protea flowers are so lovely, but is really more appreciated by more mature people. Our youngsters think they are old fashioned, believe it or not! There are over 114 species of protea in Africa, 82 of which occur in southern Africa. Of these 69 are found in the coastal region of Cape Province. Other plants in the same family are found in Australia (eg Banksia, Telopea and Hakea) and South America (eg Chilean fire bush - Embothrium coccineum). Take care

Hi, Eve! I can't say for sure that Chippendales was founded in 1979 because I really didn't think it warranted a major search! However, I remember when the New York Chippie opened (in early to mid 80s) because it was located right across the street from the tennis courts I used to play on (underneath the 59th Street Bridge). Anyway, Wikipedia has some very interesting things to say about the founders! Check it out.

I think it's a hoot that you hired a stripper for your boss's birthday! That's the kind of thing I used to do! It's probably good that you were a West Coast kid and I was a Midwest (and East Coast) kid. Who knows what trouble we might have cooked up together?

A very creative montage. The J. L. Seagull is an astute addition which begs a question. Did you ever read 'Illusions' by Richard Bach?

'Illusions, The Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah', by Richard Bach.

It is not correct to say that it is a sequel to JL Seagull, but it might be loosly looked at as an addendum. Written in the first person it continues the discovery of how reality is perceived. If you enjoyed J. L. Seagull, then 'Illusions' would be highly recommended.

Thanks for the visit - and I'm just hanging around enjoying the song - one of my fav, and also remembering my old dog Cinder - who in her younger days looked very much like the dog in your picture. If my oven locked up - and mine is over 20 years old - I go out for dinner I asked what did they want for Thanksgiving dinner - and of course they replied: pizza.... Enjoy your day - Happy Thanksgiving - Mary

My husband will have to explain the significance of the games this w/e. Here's all I know: I've only lived here 5 years so while it would be healthy to be against the ducks, I'm not a fan per se. I attended LSU for 8 years. My husband is not from there, but my sis and bro-in-law graduated from LSU, and later introduced me to hubby. We're spending New Years with them in Fla. and she is already cooking for the party which she's begrudgingly calling a New Years Party so as not to jinx UO or LSU who, of course, she's praying will be playing off in a bowl game. LSU, of course, like Bruins and Ducks, fielding best team since were were in undergrad in mid-70s.

So good luck to yours this w/e. We'll be in NY but watching closely.

BTW, how did you know I had a page? I didn't even know I got a page with a free membership until Kathy's auto-greet came to my e-mail box.
