OMG, OMG, OMG!!! Really?!?! I am sooo excited! Two of my buddies I met this summer, I get to meet you guys again? Wow! Didn't think I could pull that one off so soon. Well not me but both of you coming out here. I wish I could also show you my neighborhood. But at least we can whoop it up with a whole gaggle of us!

Sounds good...I'll be between Oakland and S.F for almost a week.(11/13-11/17) My Grandee now lives in Oakland, so that will be my main stop, with two days in S.F....but it won't be hard to go back and forth if there's a reason to..... This will be an amazing meet!

Jane - I confess it's my idea to put that acute accent over the e when I write the word to help people pronounce it with the long a sound coming after the t instead of before the t, as you indicated.
Factoid: In my research I've learned that using a bombilla MAY contribute to throat cancer because there MAY be a correlation between cases of cancer and frequent/consistent injury of mouth and throat tissues by burning with overly-hot liquids.
So, it's best to let your hot drinks cool a bit before drinking. Only makes sense, but habitual hot beverage drinkers can tend to learn to drink the brews too hot--either from a cup or through a bombilla. Hence the caution when bombillas are mentioned.

Oh, Jane. You are a wonderful friend to bring me more research on a topic of interest. It makes sense that nickel may be the culprit. I'll add that to my warning about hot water scalding tender mouth tissues. Unless major studies are done to narrow down the vague mate/throat cancer correlation, it behooves us to look at how to drink it to get its best health supplement benefit (which other studies suggest is good for cancer patients! - so it seems that it's not the mate but how some people drink it0.
I am buying Cruz de Malta brand mate (product of Argentina) by the case from NY (at the best price I've found so far) and am selling the 1/2-kilo (17.6 ounce) bags for $6.50. Otherwise I'd have to buy it for over $18 a pound at a health food store in K'zoo.
Mate is popular and has "caught on" in many larger cities, but it takes a long time for trends to saturate through to my neck of the woods, so I get to introduce many, many people to mate and eventually buy it for a lower, base wholesale price so I can make money distributing it. ( ?)

(copy and pasted here)
hehe Jane, you know the thought did cross my mind briefly..

If I was to win Lotto.. I could fly to SF, stay with Vici, go the the meet in SF, fly straight after up to Vancouver, and meet up with Rena and Daughter; and join them on the flight to Perth, and welcome her into my home on the 18th November.

Thanks for the visit to my site. I think you live in a very beautiful place. Seems they all have their pluses and minuses. Dry vs Humid, Rust from ocean salt vs. no rust, Rain vs. no rain, Greenery vs. barren desert, Hot vs. just right, and the list goes on. We are very blessed to be able to enjoy two completely different environments. We have travelled most of the US and find our arrangement very workable.

You better believe it! Golly, I wish we had more time but let's make the most of what we have! I'm going to pick up Sue Van Noy from Oklahoma at 11 at the SF Marriott on 4th. Can do the same with you, too. I rented a small car but can fit at least 4. As I said to Sue and Linda, it's been decades since I've been in SF so it'll be a madcap adventure as two possibly 3, maybe 4 with you!

Here's a recipe I've had good success with:

Eric's Chocolate Pecan Pie

Ingredients

1 Stick of butter
1 Cup of Dark Brown Sugar
3 Eggs
1 Cup of Maple Syrup
1 Lbs. of Pecan Halves
1 Bag of Ghiradelli Double Chocolate Chips (Trust me, milk chocolate chips will not taste nearly as good. You need the dark chocolate in the Ghiradelli brand.)
2 9" Deep Dish Pie Shells (Or 3 8" regular pie shells)

Instructions

1. Cream the butter and brown sugar together
2. Add Eggs and mix thoroughly
3. Add Maple Syrup and mix
4. Add Pecan Halves and mix by hand (Note the mix is going to become increasingly stiff to blend at this point.)
5. Add the Dark Chocolate Chips and mix by hand
6. Pour mix into 2 pie shells and level
7. Bake pies at 375 degrees for approximately 45 minutes until the rim of the pie crust is golden brown. (Note, the chocolate chips on top of the pie will not visibly melt. Don't wait for them to do so.)

And another good one:

Pico de Gallo Salsa(Los Angeles Times, 6/2/94)

½ white or red onion, minced
2 Roma tomatoes, seeded and chopped
1 clove garlic, minced
1 serrano chile, minced
1 tablespoon minced cilantro
Juice of ½ lime

Combine onion, tomatoes, garlic, chile, cilantro and lime juice in small bowl and mix well.
Serve with tortilla chips or as accompaniment to tacos, burritos, etc.

Makes 2 cups.

Last one!

Sweet Chex Mix

¾ stick butter or margarine
3 T. sugar
¼ tsp. garlic powder
¾ tsp. Worcestershire sauce
2 c. Rice Chex cereal
2 c. Corn Chex cereal
1 c. Cheerios
1 c. pretzels
1 c. mixed nuts

Oven:
Preheat oven to 250 degrees F.
Melt butter in 9”x13”x2” baking pan.
Remove, stir in sugar, garlic powder and Worcestershire sauce.
Gradually add Chex cereals, pretzels and nuts, mixing until all pieces are coated.
Bake for 45 minutes to 1 hour, stirring every 15 minutes.
Add the Cheerios after the 1st 15 minutes of baking, or they will get overbaked and shrunken.
Cool before serving.

Microwave:
Melt butter in a large, microwave-safe bowl on HIGH for 1 minute.
Remove, and stir in other ingredients as above.
Microwave on HIGH for 5 to 6 minutes, stirring every 2 minutes.
Cool before serving.
