nal,i loved your choice of music to represent your balloon ride, it used to be one of my favourites. My family gave me a similar ride for my (shhh 70th) birthday and Anne and I had a memorable experience followed by a champagne breakfast in among the vineyards. It was my first hot air balloon ride and it was fabulous - but it will never replace the aeroplane!

Your picture of two kites (today's easy) is fascinating to me. It bears resemblance in some respects to my own picture of two spoonbills (near the bottom of my gallery). Did the lower kite oblige you by opening its wings just as you were about to release your shutter?

I don't know if you've been following the news on "easy", but several of us are planning to converge on the Daytona Beach area in a couple of weeks to spend some time with Fiona and her tribe. Any chance you can come up for any of it? We're having a picnic/beach party Thursday evening, July 23 at Ormond Beach, and a "formal" lunch on Friday at a restaurant south of Daytona. I just viewed your 12 birds of Christmas, very good! The three spoonbills, reflected in the dark water, is just a great photo. The one that made my jaw drop though was the photo of the black-legged stilts in flight. I have never even seen that many at once, let alone captured them in flight. I will keep adding more to my gallery on the sudoku site, "Best or 2009"

How funny it is that almost as soon as one is exposed to a new word, that one sees it again!

For me, that word, today, is "Wakodahatchee!"

I recently began volunteering at Gumbo Limbo Nature Center in Boca Raton, and on December 16 I picked up a pamphlet entitled "The Wakodahatchee Wetlands," having not previously heard of the place.

The pamphlet says the wetlands are manmade, and the word "Wakodahatchee" is a made-up word which means roughly in Seminole "Created Waters."

I thought "hatchee" meant "river" (As in Loxahatchee, Turtle River), and "okee" was "waters" (as in Pa-Hey-Okee, Grassy Waters).

But I don't care what it means, if I can sight a new bird there!

I was told by the folks at Shark Valley/ENP that Loop Road was being worked on and would not be open in the center section for many months. I have yet to go that way and hope it reopens soon.

If you have not been there, I highly recommend the 2500-foot-long boardwalk at Big Cypress Bend, in Fakahatchee Strand State Park. The parking lot is directly on US41, a few miles west of FL SR29, in Collier County. The old-growth cypress and royal palm forest there is the only one of its kind.

My next trip over to SW Florida I want to go to Seminole-Collier State Park; the birders we met in Fakahatchee Strand raved about it. I got home and saw nothing but rave reviews of it. Have you been there, and do you have a Flicker Gallery of it?

And is Flicker free to upload as many as one wishes? A few years back I thought I looked into it and they had fees associated with it. I think it would be a way for my photos to get more viewings, what do you think? And if someone uses a Flicker image commercially, do they have to pay you?
