Jane, just saw your post, I just bought myself (and gave to myself as a Christmas present) a Canon Powershot sd 1000. About $200 but worth it. My sons long ago got one for me four years ago and I loved it! But last year I broke the lcd on the back (someone SAT on my purse) and the camera shop guy told me that for the same price of repairing it a little more I could get a new one with double the pixels. I did it but this time I got a pink protective cover with a taadaa! hard plastic cover where the lcd is! But it links in with the computer with ease, and I'm loving it. Oh by the way it has up to 15 minutes of video sound included!

Jane - my camera was a Canon Powershot A75. I'm sure they've changed the model numbers as they've upgraded the cameras. I've had it at least 3 years and it's been great! I dropped it several times and it kept working until very recently when it started giving me "lens error" messages. So now I need to replace it. Yay! The megapixels are so much higher now in new cameras and the cost is so much less! I paid around $200 and it was only about 3.2 MP! Now you can get 7 MP for only $100. But there are other factors to consider too. Mostly now the features - such as the settings, like portrait, beach/snow, night, etc. If you use the correct settings your pictures will turn out better because it will automatically choose the best technical settings. One problem that they never mention is shutter lag....how long you have to wait before taking the next pic. Also how long it takes to actually take the photo - my sister didn't like her camera 'cuz her daughter is a soccer player and she was always missing the shots! You might want to check some online sites that review cameras. Do you have any good camera stores nearby? We do,but where my sis lives she said they don't speak english at any of the stores near her! (wash. dc area) I also have a Nikon D50 which is an SLR. SLRs do not have shutter lag. Oh another thing to check is what type of batteries - many use AA which is handy when your batteries die. My SLR though uses a special battery pack so when it dies I have to recharge it and can't take any pictures. Hope this is helpul!

Hi Jane! I'm just starting to recover from our whirlwind Christmas. Think I was on my feet for about two solid days & when everybody left Christmas evening I was totally exhausted!! I love my little Canon Power Shot SD630 because of it's small size but large LCD screen. Think I paid around $300, but it's probably less now. I suggest you read lots of online reviews on pros & cons of each model. Also, Rob & I both invested in extra batteries so when one runs out we pop in the spare while we recharge the other one!

Eve - my first digital was a very small pocket sized camera (which I keep in my golf bag, now)it is about 5 years old but still takes good pics. I then got an HP Photosmart R707 WHICH i HAVE HAD FOR OVER 3 YEARS AND SNAPPED NEARLY 4000 PHOTOS. (excuse me I hit the caps lock) It is a brilliant point and click superb quality camera. It also has, at least here in France fantastic after sales service for problems or queries you may have. Then yesterday my surprise pressie arrived a Panasonic Lumix 10x DMC-TZ3 - I've read through the book and have photographed everything today some of which must never see the light of day ( Steven cleaning his teeth to mention one) but you have to try out all the possible options regarding light and flash, don't you?
I do not know the price of any of these but you are doing the right thing there are also independant sites on the internet who compare different cameras, pricing and ease of use for both taking pictures and downloading and printing. There are so many options out there.
Our resident master photographer on this site, nal, uses, I think a Panasonic Lumix or at least she used to but if I remember it is the SLR as well as digital. Hope this hasn-t confused you even more. Good snapping!

Eve please excuse lack of punctuation, I must have got carried away with camera talk! The little one I talked of was a Minolta. We bought it in Singapore many years ago when they were quite new qnd bought that brand because my previous non digitals were always Minolta.

Jane,

In reference to your digital camera question. I have two and like them both but to fit your $200 price range I will just tell you about one of them. I have a 5.0 mega pixel Koday CX7530 which is small and easy to carry around with you and also takes very nice photographs. I have had it for a couple of years and have taken a great many photographs in various settings and have never had a problem with it.

Just read back to Linda M's post both the HP and the Panasonic cameras have an action setting also one where you can press the button once and it takes several photos(different number with each camera)one after the other a little like a machine gun> You can also print individual stills from the camera if you have taken a short video. I found this out by following the dog around till she looked at me.

Needless to say Jane that should read Kodak not Koday. My other cameras are Canon so that is another good brand

Hey, Jane. I'm with most of the gals above in recommending the Canon Power Shot Elph, although I have a level different than all of those mentioned. This camera is dependable, will take nice pictures, is not too expensive, and is TINY. If your purpose is to shoot a lot of distance shots, however, you will have to move to a higher level camera, and more expense. We gave each other a high-grade Nikon for Christmas, and we look forward to exploring its possibilities, but I carry the Elph in my purse, and, because of its size and convenience, it will always take most of the shots! Welcome to the digital world!

Jane, good luck with your decision on cameras. It is not an easy one, but take comfort from the fact that there are many fine cameras out there so you probably won't go wrong if you stick to the well-known makes.

Hey Jane, if you get the Canon Power Shot, be sure to get the one with the rechargeable battery because it's slimmer and fits in your purse! I love mine. And for the camera shy person shots, the camera fits in the palm of your hand so you can sneak in and get a picture before they hide their faces!

Jane, Good luck with your new camera when you get it. I take it the camera will have a 12 month cover and personally I would not spend $40 on a camera costing $150 when the price of electronic equipment is falling rapidly all the time. If the camera fails after 12 months put the $40 towards another camera. We have three digitals and the one nearly 9 years old is still working. The others are 2 and 3 years old.
Other people may have a different view.

Hi Jane, I have a Fuji Finepix S602Z. I've had it since Christmas 2002 and it takes great pictures. It is big though. It looks like a slr camera, which also makes it sturdy. My kids have had kodak, canon and samsung and they all broke within 6 months because they were dropped, banged or sat on. Now I get them the cheapest one since the little ones don't last long if you're a little clumsy.(My son accidentally knocked mine off my desk and it withstood the shock.) They do make a shock resistent little camera, but I don't remember the make. Optical zoom is better than digital zoom because it gives you a better picture. Good luck!

Hi Jane ... just a note about extended warranty. Personally, on an item like this, I would not spend the money. Basically, they are throw-away cameras. If something goes wrong after the original warranty, you buy a new one that has newer technology. I did buy the extended warranty on my computer and glad I did.
to you and Jamie. You live in a beautiful place and I will return to look at more pics when I have more time.

Jane, I will be replacing my Canon Powershot with a new one in a few days. I think with the 570 or 750 or something like that! Our local camera store was all out of them. Normally I'd buy online, but I've been going to this store since son (now 14) was born to get pix developed, and the same manager has been there the whole time and has watched my kids grow up, and he knows how much of a photographer I am and just which camera is right for me! They are always helpful!

Hi Jane,
A great big for the wonderful e-card you sent for my birthday. I can't think of anywhere I'd rather be than on a tropical beach eating chocolates and sipping champers.
Thank you very much, greatly appreciated and sorry it's taken 2 days for me to get back to you.

Jane, i think you can add a word doc graphic on your page. go to update details, then scroll down to page text (or something similar, where you type in top of page stuff) On the tool bar, over on left side of page, there is Icon with a green tree, Mouse over that, it says "insert graphic". I used that to put in some graphics and i think word doc is supported.

Hi Jane! Stopped by to see your t-shirt ideas. I like the first one best, since it is most recognizable as a sudoku grid. Non-sudokuland members probably wouldn't understand the Gath & Kym "loyal subject" concept. I can't believe you are giving up your tennis league supervision!!! How will they ever function without you??

Hi Jane, The cookbook sounds like a wonderful project, and of course I'd like to download it after you've done all of the hard work.
As far as my recipe goes...It seems like I always forget to add stuff that I don't measure...Lemon juice in that recipe is optional, but I usually always add it to my sauce. I use about a tablespoon I'd guess, but since I don't measure, its trial and error. Too much can spoil the sauce, but enough added gives a nice bite...but that's my taste....not sure any of this makes good sense to you, but it seems as though you are a very good cook, so I'm sure you know how to adapt a recipe to your taste. Let me know how the dish turns out for you...its a winner at my house.
Thanks for the sweet observations about Angelique...of course I agree with every word...lol. All is well with Sully and I. He's planning on returning to work next month....YEAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaa! LOL. Peace.

Jane: I have been working on a cook book with famility / holiday / favorite recipies. Many of them have been in boxes (some falling apart), others in my collection of recipie books. What I am doing is taking a photo of the finished product & then following it by the recipie. Putting them into a photo book that takes 5x7 photos. Generally 3 pages are required for the recipie (1 for the photo & 2 for the ingredients & directions). With 100 leaves over 50 recipies can be included (figuring 2 leaves to a recipie).

A sample of a photo is the Strawberry Cream Cheese Pie.
